SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,587, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed March 13, 1880. (ModeLl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. SHERER, of Ohicago,in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vise provided with my improved clamping mechanism; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the full lines showing the jaws of the vise open, and the dotted lines showing the positions of parts when said jaws are closed.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement upon a vise invented by James M. Black; and it consists in the means for operating the pivoted jaws of the vise, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A and A represent thejaws of my vise, each of which is provided at its upper end and inner side with a serrated grasping-face, a, and near its lower end has an ear or lug, a, which fits upon or within a similar lug, a, upon the oppositejaw, and receives a bolt, B, that passes through both of said lugs and forms a pivotal connection between said jaws. Below the pivotal connection described each jaw A extends laterally outward and downward, and at its end has a broad foot, a which, when the vise is in position, rests upon the bench (J, or other surface, andfurnishes a support for said vise.
Pivoted to or upon the bolt B, between the lugs a, is one end of a bar, D, which has a flat or square form in cross-section, and, extending downward, is provided within its lower portion with a number of transverse holes, (1, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) which holes are circular.
Fitted over the lower portion of the bar D is a cam, E, which is split or bifurcated in a plane having a right angle to its axis, the width of such openin g 6 being slightly greater than the thickness of said bar, while said opening extends inward from the bearing-edge of said cam nearly to its rear edge. The cam E is pivoted upon the bar D by means of a pin, F,
which passes through an axial opening, 0, and through one of the openings d, so that said cam may be partially rotated upon said axial pin by means of a bar, G, preferably wooden, which passes into a groove formed within its rear portion, as seen in Fig. 2. The pin F is pivoted upon one end-of a bar, H, which extends along one face of the cam E, with its opposite end near the inner end of the bar G, and is pivoted centrally upon said cam, so as to be capable of a rocking movement upon its pivotal bearin g, the degree of such motion being sufficient to enable said pin to be withdrawn from the opening (1 within the bar D when the outer end of said bar H is pressed downward upon said bar Gr. A spring, h, placed between the outer portion of the bar H and the face of the cam E, holds said bar with a yielding pressure in such position as to cause the pin F to maintain its place within said cam and the bar D.
. A spring, 1, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2,) is placed within the pivotal connection between the upper portion of the jaws A, and operates to open said jaws to the limit of their motion. 7
To place the vise in position for use, the cam E is removed, a hole is bored in the bench G of sufficient size to permit the bar D to pass through and the feet a to rest upon the same, and said cam then replaced and moved upward until the smallest port-ion of its periphery bears against the lower side of said bench, or against a metal washer, L, placed around said bar D, and the outer end of the handle G is against said bench, after which the lever H is released and said cam moved downward until the pin F passes into an opening, d, in said bar D. The spring I will operate to spread the jaws A and to draw the bar D upward as far as permitted by the cam E. If, now, any article is placed between the jaws A and the handle G'moved downward, the bearing'surface of the oamE, impinging upon the lower face of the bench O or washer L, will draw the bar D downward and cause said jaws to close inward until said article is griped between the same with a degree of firmness corresponding to the downward pressure applied to said handle. Upon raising the handle the jaws A will be permitted to open, so as to release whatever is clasped between the same. Should it be necessary to pin F, handle or bar G, spring-bar H h, and place an unusually large article between the spring I within the upper portion of the jaws, jaws A, they may be permitted to open farther substantially as and for the purpose specified.
