ROPE-BUCKLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. WALLACE, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rope-Buckles, which improvement is fully set fort-h in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.

The present invention relates to rope buckles and more particularly to that type in which a rope is adapted to be secured at one end to the buckle and looped. between its ends to engage with the buckle for the purpose of providing a large loop to be employed for a number of purposes.

An object of this invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction which will effectively prevent the release of the loop.

To these and other ends the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

According to this invention, there is provided a buckle frame comprising preferably a slotted portion 1 and an eye portion 2 arranged in a plane with the slotted portion to one side of the longitudinal axis of the slot and at a point substantially midway between the ends of the slot. The rope 3 has one end 4 secured to the eye 2 and is adapted to be looped at 5 and passed through the slot-ted portion in the manner shown.

To prevent the withdrawal of the loop 5 a retaining device is employed comprising preferably a bar portion 6 adapted to bridge the slotted portion between the ends of the slot to provide space on opposite sides of the bar for the passage of the loop. To permit the bar to swing transversely of the plane of the frame, said bar may have an eye 7 at one end in alinement with the longitudinal axis thereof and through this eye is passed that end 4 of the rope which is passed through the eye 2 of the buckle frame. device slipping longitudinally when said device is in retaining position, the bar may be provided with a depending lug 8 which cooperates at its ends with the inner walls of the loop, while the buckle frame may be provided with a segmental extension 9 projecting upwardly from the eye 2 and en gaging about the eye 7. It will be noted that the upward movement of the retainer is secured by having the latter free from the frame and located entirely on one side of the frame and its eye.

In using the invention, the buckle with its retaining device is secured to one end of a rope by passing the rope through the eyes 2 and 7 The rope is then passed about a suitable body and a portion thereof is formed into a loop 5 which is passed through the loop slot of the buckle frame, the retaining device being moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, to permit the passage of the loop. While the loop is in the position shown in Fig. 4, the retaining device is lowered to bridge the slot and then the loop is lowered to engage the retaining device.

It will be noted that the retaining device cannot swing from retaining position so long as tension is applied to the rope. The arrangement of the eye to one side of the slot, in addition to giving an upward swingi-ng movement to the retaining member, produces a twisting action on the rope which gives greater friction on the rope buckle and thus prevents all slipping. The buckle may be used on horse ties, hammock ties and in numerous other places where an action of this kind is desired.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a rope buckle, the combination with a frame having a loop slot and an eye to one side of the slot at a point between the ends thereof, of a free retainer having a bar for bridging the slot and an eye at one end of the bar alined wit-h the eye of the frame and said retainer being entirely located on the same side of the frame and its eye.

2. In a rope buckle, the combination of a frame having a loop slot and an eye to one side of the longitudinal axis of the slot at a point between the ends thereof, said eye having a segmental flange; with a retaining bar having a depending projection on one side cooperating at its ends with side Walls of the slot and also having an eye at one end in alinement with the bar, received Within the segmental flange.

3, A rope buckle comprising a frame hav ing a loop slot and an eye to one side of the longitudinal axis of the loop slot at a point midway between the ends thereof, said eye having a curved shoulder about the same; and a free retaining bar bridging the slot and having an eye at one end in aline- 10 ment therewith, engaged by the curved shoulder.
