Be it known that I, LEWIS MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roseland, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gates and relates more particularly to farm gates and means for opening and closing the same.
The features of the present invention reside in the novel means whereby the gate may be either opened or closed from either side by the operator at a distance from the same.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of a simple and comparatively inexpensive construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, claimed and more particularly pointed out in the drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a farm gate showing my improved device applied; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking member; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the supporting brace, and Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2 showing the op erating lever in full lines when the gate is locked and in dotted lines when it is unlocked.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by the same reference throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the usual farm gate consisting of longitudinal bars 2 secured together at their ends by vertical members 3 and braced by diagonal member 4. The gate is hinged as at 5 between two gate posts 6.
Pivoted as at 7 to the diagonal member 4 of the gate is a longitudinally extending lever 8 which projects a little beyond the gate as at 9 and adapted to engage the spring lock 1.0 formed upon the front gate post. This lock consists of a laterally extending member 11 which is secured to the gate post and a spring pressed dog 12 pivoted at one end thereof, having an offset portion 13 which is normally held against the top of the member 11 by means of a leaf spring 14.

The ends of the operating lever 18 are oppositely bent forming extensions 19. A link 20 is pivotally connected at one end to the front extension 19 and its opposite end is pivotally connected to the lever 8 as at 21. Spaced at a suitable distance on each side of the gate are posts 22 each having secured thereto two pulleys 23. Extending over these pulleys 23 are operating cables 24 having one end connected to the extension 19 as at 25 and each having a weight or operating handle 26 secured to the opposite end thereof.
It is obvious from the foregoing that when a person is about to pass through the gate he may without dismounting from a horse or leaving a vehicle unlatch and open the same by giving a slight pull on one of the handles 26 and by pulling on the opposite handle the gate will readily close and latch.
Having described my invention and what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a plurality of posts, of a gate cooperatively mounted therebetween, a catch carried by one of said posts, a catch lever pivoted on said gate and adapted to cooperate with said catch, bearings mounted on said gate, an operating lever mounted for rotation in said bearings, arms formed at right angles at the terminals of said lever and extending in opposite directions, means for actuating said operating lever, and means whereby the outer end of the catch lever may be moved upon the rotation of the operatinglever aforesaid.
2. The combination with a plurality of posts, of a gate cooperatively mounted therebetween, a catch carried by one of said posts,
a catch lever pivoted on said gate and adapted to cooperate with said catch, bear-' ings mounted on said gate, an operating lever mounted for rotation in said bearings, arms formed at right angles at the terminals of said lever and extending in oppowith said gate, the upper terminals of said bearings being at right angles to the body portion thereof, an operating-lever mounted for rotation in the upper terminals of said bearings, an upwardly extending arm formed at one terminal of said lever, a clependent arm formed at the opposite terminal thereof, a link connecting said upwardly extending arm to said latch lever, and actuating means secured to the terminal of said arm and extending in opposite direct-ions on each side of the gate aforesaid.
