DENTAL MIRROR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 30, 1912.

EDWARD P. BEADLES, OF DANVILLE, VIRGINIA.
DENTAL MIRROR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed March 30, 1912. Serial No. 687,393.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. BEADLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Mirrors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to dental mirrors and has for its object to provide a device of this character wherein a shield is adapted to be incorporated. This shield is for the purpose of widening the corner of the mouth while operating, to allow additional refiection of light into the cavity of the tooth and also to act as a protector to the cheek.
The invention also includes means by which my improved construction may be adapted to some of the forms of dental mirrors now in common use, at a very slight expense.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and the same will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mouth mirror showing a shield permanently attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the parts of a mirror and shield made detachable. Fig. 3 is a side view partly in section of the device shown in Fig. 2, said parts being assembled.
In the form of my device shown in Fig. 1, 1 is a mirror of the usual type, which is adapted to be incased in a suitable frame 2. A screw threaded shank 2* is fixed to the casing 2. A shield 3 of any desired material is permanently secured to said shank 2 and has its greatest width adjacent to said frame. The shield 3 is secured to the shank 2 in such a manner that a space will be left between the lower end of the shield and the casing 2. This permits the shank to be bent at this point and allows the mirror to be adjusted to any desired angle relative to said shank 2. 4c is a handle of the ordinary kind and is adapted to be screwed into said screw threaded shank 2 This form of my invention may be made in such manner that the parts when once assembled, will remain permanent.
Another form of my invention is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which the parts are made detachable. 1 is the mirror which is set in a frame 2 the said frame having a screw threaded shank 3 45 is the shield, which is provided with a depressed portion P and an aperture A It is also provided with a plurality of fingers 5, projecting from the shield. A handle 6 is provided having a screw threaded socket adapted to engage the shank 3 the said shield being interposed between the handle and the frame and being held in place by the former. To assemble said device, the screw threaded shank 3 is inserted through the aperture 4 of the shield from the rear, then pushed along the depressed portion i", underneath the fingers 5 and then secured in place by means of the handle 6.
In the use of the devices as described, the mouth of the patient will be widened and the cheek pressed outwardly by the shield, thus allowing greater latitude for the work of the operator, and at the same time protecting the cheek from injury. It is also obvious that an additional amount of light will be admitted to the mouth, which will result in additional reflection upon the part being treated.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A dental mirror provided with a handle, and a shield secured to said handle adjacent to said mirror.
2. A dental mirror provided with a handle, and a shield detaehably secured to said handle adjacent to said mirror.
3. A dental mirror provided with a shank, a shield adapted to engage said shank and a handle adapted to secure said shield upon said shank.
4. A dental mirror provided with a screw threaded shank, a shield engaging said shank and a handle provided with a screw threaded aperture to engage said screw threaded shank and secure said shield.
55. A shield for a dental mirror adapted to be secured along the handle on both sides of the same adjacent to said mirror, whereby the mouth can be widened and the cheek protected during a dental operation.
6. A shield adapted to be secured to a In testimony WhereofI aflix my signature,
I dental mirror, comprising a plate provided in the presence of two Witnesses.
EDWVARD P. BEADLES.
with a depressed portion, an aperture at one end of said depressed portion, and a plurality of fingers out out from said plate and bent to form a bridge over said depressed portion.
'Witnesses:
J. L. BAGBY, T. G. GUERRANT.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
