HENRY ROSENTHAL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,223, dated June 27, 1876; application filed May 23, 1876.
To all whom-it may concern: Be it known that I, HENRY ROSENTHAL, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in brushes, and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby the bristles are divided up into sections or parcels, and each section or parcel being secured in a small rectangular metal frame, which can be removed from the handle at will, so that the bristles can be cleaned or applied to another handle.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
(t represents a suitable handle, that may be made in any form or shape that may be preferred, and which has secured to its sides, by means of screws, the metal strips 0. These strips project considerably beyond the edges v of the handle, andextend around the ends, as
shown, and each one has a deep crease or groove, d, formed in it, just on a level with the -edgeof the handle. Placed upon the edge of this handle are a number of small metallic frames, 6, having the flanges g projecting outwardl'rom two of its edges, so as to catch in the creases d, and in which frames the bristles are secured by means of a suit-able cement placed upon their ends, and a wedge or wedges ward, so as to overlap the edges of the handle,
and be secured in position by means of a screw,
and thus be made stationary instead of movable.
By thus dividing the bristles into sections they can be readily and easily cleaned, and
when worn too short for use in a large brush two, three, or any number of them may be placed upon a smaller handle, and thus an eX- cellent new brush be formed.
In order that the handle may be made longer or shorter, as may be desired, there may be a socket made in the part a, and a series of holes, into which socket the end of the long rod may be inserted to any desired depth, and fastened by means of a set'screw or other suitable fas tening.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1.. The metallic frames 6, provided with the flanges g, so that they may be rigidly or removably attached tothe handle, as shown.
2. The combination of the handle a and strips 0, for holding the frames 0 in position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of May, 1876.
HENRY ROSENTHAL.
