PUMP-GAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed May 20, 1910. Serial No. 562,545.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lns'rnn M. RIoH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump- Caps, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the upper portion of a pump provided with my attachment; Fig. 2 a similar view at right angles to the plane on which Fig. 1 is taken; and Fig. 3 is an under plan view of the cap showing the manner in which the slide is held in place. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a disk for supporting the slide.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple closure device for the slot formed in the cap for the passage of the pump rod, this device being so arranged that the slot is at all times closed to the ingress of all foreign objects which would be likely to injure the pump piston and valves and yet open to the ingress of water when it is desired to pour water down into the pump for the purpose of priming it, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
a designates the usual pump cap which is fastened to the usual pump casing b, the top of said pump cap being provided with the usual hole for the passage of the pump rod, this hole being transversely elongated to form a slot which permits the pump rod to swing laterally as it is moved up and down.
I-Ield against the under side of the top wall of the cap is a sliding plate a which is provided with a hole midway its length for the passage of the pump rod and which is sufficiently wide to cover the slot in the cap. This plate is held up against the cap by a disk (I which fits within the circular cap and is held against the under side of the top wall thereof by pins or lugs c driven into or cast on the cap body. The top edge of the pump casing also serves to assist in holding this disk in place. This disk holds the slide d loosely up against the cap top-wall, and the disk is provided with a transverse channel or groove f in which the slide freely works, and said channeled portion is provided with a longitudinal slot 9 which is coincident with the slot in the cap and is long enough to permit the lateral swing or shifting of the pump rod.
It will be observed thatas the pump rod is moved up and down and shifted or swung laterally, the slide 0 slides back and forth in the channel in the confining disk, thus always keeping the slot in the cap closed against egress of solid foreign bodies. The fit of the part-s however is sufficiently free to permit water to be poured down into the pump for priming purposes. The channel in the disk forms a guide for the sliding plate, and the disk is prevented from rotatively shifting by means of the pins or lugs c which engage notches in the edge of the disk. This device is preferably employed with a. pump cap of the type shown, in
which a sort of hopper is formed on the cap by means of a flange h to receive, funnellike, the priming water, but it is obvious that it may be employed with other forms of caps.
It will be understood that the disk (Z may be fastened to the cap in any suitable way. For instance, in addition to, or in lieu of, the lugs or pins 6, I may fasten the disk by means of screws 9 shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a pump casing and a cap secured thereon, said cap being provided with a slot in its top wall and with a funnel or hopper surrounding the same, a plate fastened to the under side of said cap and provided with a slot coincident with the aforesaid slot in the cap, a sliding plate provided with a hole for the passage of the pump rod and slidingly confined between said plate and the under side of the pump cap, the fit of the parts being sufliciently loose to permit water to be run 'down from the hopper or funnel into the pump casin for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a pump casing and a cap secured thereon, said cap being provided with a slot in its top wall and with a funnel or hopper surrounding the same, a plate fastened to the under side of said cap and provided with a slot coincident with the aforesaid slot in the cap, a sliding plate provided with a hole for the passage of the pump rod and slidingly confined be- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses 10 this 6th day of May, 1910.
