CHARLES E. FERR/E, OF GUNNISON, UTAH.
WATER-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. *7, 1914.
Application filed September 3, 1913. Serial No. 787,852.
To all whom t may conce/m:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. FERRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gunnison, in the county of Sanpete and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Water-Gate; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invent-ion relates to a new and useful and improved water gate, for cont-rolling the water through any size canal or ditch.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations, to which the applicant is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination o-f parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings i-Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the improved gate as applied to a ditch. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the gate removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4t is a sectional view on line 4-t of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the plate 12, showing one of the bars 6 integral therewith.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 designates a frame to be inserted in a ditch or canal, as shown in Fig. 1. This frame comprises the vertical side bars 2, which are angular in cross section, the upper bar 3, and the lower bar 1i, which is likewise angular in cross section. Secured to the vertical side bars 2 intermediate the upper and lower bars 3 and 4t are bars 6 forming a guide space 7 for the sliding gate 8. Secured to the lower bar 4 is a strip 9, between which and the flange 10 of the lower bar 4L a guide space 11 is provided, in which the lower end of the gate is guided. The gate 8 is only half as wide as the distance between the vertical side bars 2, and is adapted to slide from one bar 2 to the opposite bar 2, so as to .control the water in its flow through the ditch or canal. One half of the space between the two vertical side bars 2 and below the bar 6 is permanently closed by the plate 12, while the other half of the space between the vertical side bars 2 is left open, but may be closed or restricted by the sliding gate 8. The bar 6 on t-he rear or the farther side of the structure shown in Fig. 2 ext-ends from one bar 2 to the opposite bar 3 and is integral with the plate 12, and the same acts similar to the bar 6 in Fig. 5. Pivoted at 13 by means of the bolt 14E is a lever 15 having a slot 16 at its lower end, and through which slot and the gate 8, a bolt 17 extends, thereby pivotally connecting the lower end of the lever to the gate. The upper end of the lever is provided with a slot 19, through which a bolt 20 extends. This bolt 20 may be adjusted in any one of the various apertures 22 of the upper bar 3, for holding the lever in adjusted positions, and likewise the gate.
The` invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a wat-er gate for a trench or canal, a frame comprising vertical side bars, top and bottom bars, said bottom bar being angular in cross section, and a pair of intermediate bars secured to the side bars of the frame and constituting a guide, a plate permanently closing one half of the space be tween the side bars and below the intermediate bars, al strip secured to one of the flanges of the lower angle bar, between which strip and the other flange of the lower bar a guide space is provided, a gate mounted in the guides of the intermediate bars and in the guide of the lower bars, and adapted for closing or restricting the other half of the opening between said side bars, and means for operating and holding the gate in adjusted positions.
2. In a water gate for a canal, trench or the like, a frame comprising vertical side bars, top and bottom bars, and a pair of intermediate bars, the bottom and intermediate bars constituting guides, a plate permanently closing one half of the space between the side bars and below the intermediate bars, a gate mounted in said guides, and adapted for closing or restricting the other half of the opening between the side bars, and means for operating and holding the gate in adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES E. FERRE.
