Description

4 1 L. QALLAHE. noon AND GATE-SPRING.
Na. 172,418. Patented Jan .18,1876.
fly] I M n n n 1 n J u' I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI GALLAHER, OF BUSINESSBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR AND GATE SPRINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,418, dated J annary 18, 1876; application filed June 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, LEVI GALLAHER, of Businessburg, Belmont county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Grate-Spring, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists in combining, with a gate, a spring, slotted plate, slide, and dog, as hereinafter more fully described.
Figure 1 is partly a side elevation, and partly a sectional elevation, of my gate with the improved spring attached. Fig. 2 is a section of the post, to which the auxiliary hinge-post of the gate is bolted, and also showing the spring. Fig. 3 is a detail in top View, showing the spring contrivance for closing the gate. Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 3 on the line a: m.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the pintle portion, and B the arms, of the rod, on which the slats are mounted for making the gate and hinging it. D is the auxiliary post to which the gate is hinged, and E is the one to which the gate closes and fastens. These posts are bolted to the permanent posts F and G by bolts H in holes I, which are larger than the bolts to allow of shifting them to adjust the gate, as may be required from time to time on account of the sagging of the posts. In case the gate is to swing half round one way in openin g the post D Will be bolted onto the face of the post F facing the post G; but in case it is to swing alike in both directions it will be arranged as represented in the drawing. J is the spring in or on the post F for closing the gate. It extends up through a slot, K, in a plate, L, jointed to the top plate M on the slats, in such manner that the gate pushes the spring back when itopens, to enable the spring to push it shut. The spring also passes through a sliding platc, N, on which plate L works to he used for locking the spring back, in case it is not wanted to be used. The dog 0 swings up in front of the end of this plate to hold it back for so lockin g the spring. The button I? will prevent the dog from acting when turned upward for that purpose, but it only acts in case the gate is purposely swung back far enough for the purpose, which is farther than is ordinarily required for passing through. Q, represents the reverse catch-plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The spring J and slotted plate L, combined with the gate, substantially as specified.
'2. The slide N and dog 0, combined with the slotted plate L, spring J, and the gate, substantially as specified.
LEVI GALLAIEIER.
