J. HARRISON.
GATE HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 15. 1915.
1 ,200,879 Patented Oct. 10, 1916.
was" rrAnaIsoN; or Maren cirii, rDAIio-l earn-Hindi Specification of Letters Patent.
Pat'entedOct. 10, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be'it known that I, JOHN HARnIsoN,--a citizen of the United States, residing at'Malad City, in the county of Oneida and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to improve the construction of gate hinge disclosed in Patent No. 1,035,584, granted to me August 13th, 1912, by providing a gate hinge that can be more readily and conveniently applied to a gate and gate post, will admit of the caster carried by the lower end of the gate having freer travel over the ground, so as to relieve the hinge and the gate post from considerable strain.
Another object of the invention is to provide a gate hinge, for carrying out the above object, that will be of simple construction, cheap to manufacture, durable and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompany? ing drawing, forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate and gate post, showing the gate hinge connected thereto, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hinge removed from the gate, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a stud carried by the gate post and adapted to have connection with the hinge on the gate, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the gate hinge.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
letter A designates a gate, B the gate post,
and C the lower hinge for the gate.
My improved hinge includes an elongated metallic plate 1, carried by the top rail of the gate, and positioned at the lower edge thereof, and provided with openings 2 for the reception of fastening elements 3, by means of which the plate is held secure to the gate.- The rear end of the plate lies flush with the rear panel of the gate, and the l0ngitudinal edges of the plate are bent outwardly and downwardly, in the direction of each other, asat I and 5, and are spaced from the plate so as to provide a guide 6, the said longitudinal edges 4 and 5 being also spaced from each other, so as to provide a'longitudinal passage 7 Located within the guide channel 6, is an elongated slide 8. This slide 8 has a longitudinal rib 9 integrally formed on the outer side thereof, and extending at right angles to the slide, and into the longitudinal passage 7. Formed integrally with the outer side of the slide and at the rear end thereof, and with the rear end of the longitudinal rib 9, is one end of a laterally extending lug 10, the free end of which projects a considerable distance beyond the slide and the rib 9. The lug 10 is provided, at a point beyond the plane of the rib 10, with a circular opening 11, the walls of the opening being provided at diametrically opposite points with recesses 12.
Positioned at the upper end of the gate post is an angular shaped bracket 13, one end of which is secured to the post, by means of fastening elements 14, and the other end extends at right angles to the post and in the direction of the rear end ofthe gate and has its free end provided with a vertically disposed cylindrical shaped stud 15, adapted to be loosely received by the circular opening 11 in the plate 10, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The upper end of the stud 15 has a laterally extending projection 16 thereon, which is adapted to overlie the plate 10 and in spaced relation thereto and prevent the accidental disconnection of the plate from the stud when the gate is moved upwardly. When the gate is being mounted on the gate post, the gate is held in a position whereby one of the recesses 12 will register with the projection 16 on the stud, and the gate moved downwardly so as to cause the opening 11 to receive the stud l5 and also to cause the companion parts of the hinge C to be connected.
In use, when the gate is moved to open position and the roller or caster D, which is carried by the front end of the gate, travels over any obstruction, or up and down grade the slide 8 will travel back and forth in the guide 6, thereby permitting the gate to have vertical rocking movement, and prevent strain from being exerted on the post and the upper hinge.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is:
In a gate, the combination of a guide plate, said guide plate having its longitudinal edges bent outwardly and downwardly toward each other, said longitudinal edges With said rib, said right angular lug having 10 being spaced from each other to form a lona recess therein adapted to engage a pintle.
gitudinal passage, a slide associated with In testimony whereof I affix my signature i ment therein, a longitudinal rib formed on said guide and free for longitudinal movein presence of two Witnesses.
said slide and extending laterally between JOHN HARRISON the downward bent edges of the plate, a Witnesses:
right angular lug projecting laterally from D. J. LEWIS,
one end of the slide and formed integral J. R. THOMAS.
