YUNITED STATES D D MILLER, OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
DOOR-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
atented June 12, 1906.
Application filed January 27,1906. Serial No. 298,091.
T0 tu whom, www] CORP/67%:
Be it known that I D D MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a barndoor hanger, showing the different parts properly connected. Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the upper part of a door and illustrating in section the door-suspending straps and the hinge-head, also showing a sectional view of the Washer or filling-blocks. Fig. 3 is a detached view of one of the fillingblocks or washers. Fig. 4is a sectional view showing the upper portion of the door-suspending straps and'head in section and the straps connected directly with the head. Fig. 5 is a top view of the head, showing its end flanges in section.
The present invention has relation to barndoor hangers; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. i
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a portion of the door, which of course may be of any size. To the top or upper end of the door are attached the straps 2, which straps are provided at their top or upper ends with the angled portions 3 and 4, which angled portions are substantially of the form shown, and, as shown, the portions 3 are preferably located at an inclined angle to the straps proper and the portions 4 located in a plane parallel with the main portions of the straps 2. Upon the door 1 is located the head 5, which head comprises in its construction a body portion adapted to be seated upon and secured to the upper edge of the door and is provided at its lopposite ends with integral vertically and laterally disposed flanges, the vertical flanges 7 being located midway of the lateral flange 6, which flanges are provided with inclined or beveled faces conforming to the angular offset of the respective door-straps, and thereby providing a shouldered seat for said straps. To the flanges 7 isconnected the hinge-bar S and to which hinge-bar is connected the housing 9, in which housing is mounted the supporting wheel or roller l0, which roller is adapted to travel upon a suitable track or way.
It is well understood that in the construction of barn-doors especially they vary in thickness, and owing to this fact it is dillicult to provide means for properly connecting the suspending-straps without means for securely clamping the head to the door and at the same time properly spacing the suspendingstraps, so that they can be snugly seated against the faces of the door regardless of the thickness thereof. By my peculiar arrangement the difficulty just above pointed out is overcome. The straps 2 can be placed upon the sides of the door and the angled portions 3 thereof located over the inclined flanges 6, and if in the event the door is of such a thickness that the angled portions 4 of the straps 2 do not come in snug contact with the faces of the upward-extended flanges 7 washers or filling-blocks ll can be inserted between the inner faces of the angled portions 4 and the outer faces of the upward-extended flanges 7 after which the parts can be clamped together by means of suitable clamping-bolts 12. By providing the inclined-faced flanges 6 and forming the angled portions 3 at an angle to the body of the straps corresponding substantially with the angle of the flanges 6 the head 5 will be drawn snugly against the top or upper edge of the door l as the angled portions 4 are drawn toward each other. It will be understood that as the straps 2 are moved away from each other the angled portions 3 will move downward upon the inclined faces of the flanges 6, thereby changing the vertical positions of the straps 2, and in order to provide for this slight vertical movement the upward-extended flanges 7 are provided with the elongated apertures 13, which allows the clamping-bolts to move up and down a sufhcient distance to compensate for the slight vertical movement of the straps 2, together with their angled portions 3 and 4. It will of course be understood that this movement is quite slight; but provision must be made to compensate for the different thickness of doors. By providing a means for placing washers or filling-blocks between the inner faces of the angled portions 4 and the outer faces of the extended flanges 7 I am enabled to shift the hinge-bar 8 at any desired point intermediate the edges of the lOO IIO
door or to centrally locate said hinge-bar. The hinge-bar 8 is formed of such a length that its ends will come in close contact with the clamping-bolts 12, thereby dispensing with any devices necessary for holding the hinge-bar in position, owing to the fact that when the clamping-bolts 12 are placed in position they will hold said hinge-bar against displacement. The housing 9 is provided with the downward-extended flange 14, which is provided at its lower end with the bent or curved part 15, which forms a connection for the housing 9 to the hinge-bar 8.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door-hanger, a door, and a head provided with upwardly-extended flanges and inclined-faced flanges, suspending-straps provided with inclined portions adapted to rest upon the inclined faces of the flanges of the head, a hinge-bar carried by the upwardextended flanges and means for clamping the suspending-straps to the upward-extended flanges, and a housing hinged to the hingebar, said housing provided with a roller adapted to travel upon a track or way, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a door-hanger, a door, door-suspending straps, a head or block provided with strap-connecting flanges, the straps adapted to be connected to the flanges, fillingblocks located between the strap-connecting flanges and the upper ends of the suspending-straps, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3.' In a door-hanger, a door, suspendingstraps provided with angled portions at their upper ends,A a head provided with upwardlyeXtended flanges, said head provided with elongated apertures, a hinge-bar connected to the upward-extended flanges, bolts adapted to clamp the suspending straps and adapted to secure the hinge-bar in position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In a door-hanger, the combination of a door, door-straps adjustable to and from each other and provided with inclined portions and portions formed parallel with the main portions of the suspending-straps, a head or block provided with upwardly-extended flanges and inclined-faced flanges upon opposite sides of the upwardly-extended flanges and filling-blocks adapted to be clamped .between the upwardly-extended flanges and the upper end angled portions of the suspending-straps, and clamping-bolts adapted to clamp the suspending-straps, and a hinge-bar held in position by the clampingbolts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses,
D D MILLER. Witnesses: f
