erly understood and readily carried into effect, I have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the appliance made in accordance with and constituting my invention, and designed in that position for a short waist. Fig. 2 is a similar view in which position it is designed for a long waist. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the appliance taken through the lines a, b, of Fig. 1, all hereafter more fully referred to and described. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the device. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a pinhook used in connection with my device.

According to my invention, I provide a band or curved plate A of any suitable metal having a belt B of any suitable material attached thereto, and carrying a buckle C fixed to one of its extremities. This metal band or plate A is so curved as to be applicable either to a short or long waist by inverting it in the manner indicated or com.- paring Figs. 1 and 3, and is provided at certain distances apart with two or three sets of tongue pieces D, three sets of these pieces D are shown in the drawings horizontally shaped out of but still forming part of the metal band A aforesaid, and corresponding tongue pieces E, shown in dotted lines Figs. 1 and 2, vertically cut out of the band clamp the turned in ends of the frictional element or sections F of the rubber which extend at the top and bottom of the strip being as in Fig. 3 in spaced apart relation to each other. These tongue pieces may or may not pass through slits, not shown, formed in sections of rubber F having a roughened surface as shown, and which are placed on the inside face of the metal band A, the tongue pieces E being bent over clasp firmly and hold the sections of rubber in their place. The rubber sections are made slightly deeper than the breadth of the metal band at top and bottom and each end is folded in under the outer face of the rubber and of course held there by the tongue pieces. Suitable pinhooks It or safety pins are detachably connected to the band for engaging with the skirt when the band is in use. The band may be provided with recessed portions R between the rubber sections to prevent the pinhooks R sliding along the metal band or, the frictional elements or sections E,

which as before stated are slightly deeper than the breadth of the metal band at the top and bottom thereof, retain the ends of the hooks R from sliding along, and further, because of the disposition of the hook ends between the elements E, they are not in a position to bear against the garment or cause bulging. It will be observed that the curvature of the band is suchthat it can be applied either for a short or long waist.

I claim A garment retainer comprising in combination, a girth, an elongated strip carried thereby, a plurality of friction pads disposed on one face of said strip in spaced apart relation to each other, adapted to engage a portion of a garment, and extending beyond the upper margin of the said strip, and a plurality of devices adapted for connection to a second garment and including hooks for engagement with said strip along its upper margin between said friction pads, and having their ends also lying therebetween, the relative thickness of said hooks and friction pads being such that the latter protrude beyond the former at the face of the strip.
