To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, AUGUsTINE F. NAY- Lon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort W'ayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to barrel covers, its object being to provide a simple, cheap, light and eflcient cover for barrels whereby the contents of a. barrel shall be visible and at the same time protected from dirt and insects.
Another object is to provide a cover which shall be capable of variation in its size, thereby enabling the same to be used on va rious sizes of barrels.
I accomplish these objects by the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated inthe drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of a cover constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion of the same being broken away to show the interior of the hem. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same showing the parts in a contracted position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a. transparent central portion preferably formed of a circular sheet of Celluloid, to which are stitched four or more segments 2 of suitable fabric such as cloth. To the outer edge of segments 2 is stitched a hem 8 of similar fabric. The open ends 4L of the hem overlap and any desirable depth of hem may be provided. A split hoop 5 is inserted through the open ends into the hem and by expanding or contracting the hoop any desired diameter of cover may be obtainedwithin the limit of the length of the hoop and hem. The ends of the hoop preferably overlap.

After the hoop is inserted and adjusted to the desired diameter of the cover, tacks or other suitable fastening devices 6 are driven through the hem and the overlapping ends of the hoop thereby securing the parts in fixed position. Since the ends of the hem overlap, it may be stretched or expanded to considerable extent by expanding the hoop, or by permitting the hoop to expand. The size of the cover may, therefore, be varied within a considerable range, dependent on the amount of overlap of the open ends of the hem.
In practice the cover will ordinarily fit over the top of the barrel, but it may be inserted within the top with equal benefit to the goods within the barrel.
The cover constructed as described is exceedingly light and durable and is cheap to manufacture.
What I claim is:
l. A cover comprising a central portion, a plurality of fabric segments stitched to the edge of the central portion, a hem stitched to the outer edges of the segments having its ends open and overlapping, a split hoop within the hem and means to secure the hem and hoop in any adjusted position.
2. A cover comprising a. central Celluloid portion, a plurality of fabric segments stitched to the edge of the central portion, a hem stitched to the outer edges of the segments having its ends open and overlapping, a split hoop within the hem and means to secure the hem and hoop in any adjusted position.
