ADJUSTABLE cas'riia.
Specification of Letters'l'atent.
No. 612,853. Renewed November 13, i911.v Serial No. 660,117.
Application led March 7, 1911, Serial To all whom 'it may Be it known that GER, a citizen of the at Great Falls, in thegcounty of Cascade an State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Casters, of which the following is a speciication. p
This invention comprehends certainfnew and useful improvements in casters for the legs of tables and other articles of furniture. and the invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of caster of the adjustable type, whereby' the caster may be released whenever desired from its normal operative position so as to permit the legs of the table or the like to rest solidly on the, floor, and whereby the caster shank may be securely held upright in its normal operative position vwhen it is desired to roll the article of furniture from one place to another. And the invention also has for its object to generally improve this class of devices and to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
VVit-lfi'l these and other objectsjn view, as will more fully appear as the description.-
coacern: y
I, H Aimisorr D. Bonnin- United States, residing constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
.A For a full understanding of the inventipn,
accompanying drawing, in
scription and which:
' Figure 1 is a view illustrating one appli cation Vof my invention, the device being shown as applied to a table which is illus-4 trated in sideelevation; Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal sectional view of one of the casters, the parts being shown partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view illus- Gorresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying draw` ing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l designates the leg of an article of furniture a table, selected for the purposes of .illustration only. A slotted plate 2. is secured, by screws or to. one side of the of the latter, said sides of its similar fastening devices leg 1, near the lower end I formed on opposite Yverticall in the casing `3, whereupon the shank 5 may PATENT orricii.
MONTANA.

slotavit'h bearing ears, in which oppositely proJecting'trunnions are mounted to turn. rflic trunnions 4 are `formed on one 'end' of d a shank 5, and to the otligtnd of said slank a swiveled roller, ofany desired 'type or character, is connected. I
A casing. 7 is secured'in any desired way to the side of the leg. l above the plate 2, and a locking bolt 8 is mounted to move 7 so as to be engaged with an disengaged from the outerside of the shanlrV 5, as required.' The inner edge formed with a lon- A of the locking bolt 8' is glitudinal groove 9 the' walls of which are esigned to fit over andfpartially around the shank 5 so that when its operative position, the locking b'olt will not-only hold the shank securely against the side of the leg, but will prevent it from skewing or moving laterally 1in a` plane parallel to the plane of said side, therebyv relieving the trunnions 4 3 from undue strain.
In'the present embodiment of the invention, a locking bolt at one side of vthe table or other article of furniture is secured to a corresponding opposite means'of a chain l0 or similar flexible con nection, the chain passing through screw eyes 11 secured to the sides of the legs and over pulleys or rollers l2 secured to convenient port-ions of the table ory the like, whereby two locking bolts may be simultaneously i raised by merely pressing down upon an intermediate portion of the chain which connects them. Freferablyrtlie locking bolt 8 is formed at its upper end with a laterally projecting head 8, easily engaged by the hand or toe so as to raise the locking'bolt in this way.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of iny improved adjustable caster will `be apparent. In the practical use. of the device, the pivotally mounted shank 5 of the caster is normally held securely against lthe side of the leg to which it is conl nected, by the engageinentof the longitudinally grooved locking over and partially around the shank. WhenL ever it' is desired to lower the leg so that it may rest stationary it is only necessary to raise and bearing ears the locking bolt easily swing out and assume an inclined position relative the caster is inl locking bolt by which 4may be blt8 l' ddownov Sippe and solidly on the iioor,
It is evident that'the device may lie in'iidel very cheaply and that it is composed ofcomparat-ively fewparts that maybe readilyassembled and that will be durablerand not eye il serves liable to get` out of order.'
It is obvious that in addition to its function as a guide for theielhain 10, the screiT as a stop to limit the upward movement of the locking bolt. Y n What I claim is:` 1. The combination 'with -an article of furniture provided'with a leg, of a caster embodying a shank ivotall connected to the leg, and a locking olt sli ingly mounted upon the leg and arranged to extend down over .the .shank to-hold the latter rigidly' against .the adjoinin sideo the leg.
2. A. easter of t e character described,
comprising a plate vformed withears, a lShank formed with trunnions j-ournnled in said ears, a easing, ed Afor a longitudinal movement in said casing and designed to extend over the shank, the bolt being formed on its innell edge with a longitudinal groove designed to extend partially around the shank.
3. An adjustable caster'Y comprising n. shank formed with trunnions, a slotted plate formed on opposite sides of its slot with bearin ears 1n which the trunnions are joulna ed, a casing adapted to extend over shank, and a locking bolt movable longitudinally in said casing.
In testimony whereof, I affix in presence of two witnesses.
