Specication of Letters E'aten't. I
Patented Septj, 1911,41.
Application led May M, 1913. Serial No. 769,545.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known'that I. ROBERT H. Kroos, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan. in the county of Sheboygan and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and r useful Improvements in Drawer-Guides, of
which the following is a description, reference. `being hadto the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drawer guides. V
lt one of the objects of 'thev present invention to provide a drawer guide which willeliminate friction toa considerable extcntand prevent binding of the parts. A further object of the invention is to provide a drawer guide which will facilitate the'opening and closing of the drawer and which -will prevent the tilting of the drawer downwardly when the drawer is withdrawn almost entirely out of its casing.
A yfurther object of the invention is to provide'a drawer guide whichmay be easily applied to vordinary drawersv now in common use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drawer guide having-anti-friction means which vare so constructed as to elimivnate the possibility of any of the parts be-` 30,
coming lost or getting out of their proper position.
A further object of the invention is toV provide a drawer guide which is of simple construction, is strong and durable and is well adapted for the purpose desired.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention Y consists of the improved drawer guide and its parts and combinationsas set forth in the claims,` and all equivalents thereof. In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views: Figure 1 is a front -view of a portion of a piece of furniture or casing having the improved drawer guides mounted therein, the drawer being in section;Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of one of. the drawer guides; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View thereof on a larger scale; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a modified form of drawer;` and Fig. 5 is a similar view of one side portion of another modified form thereof.
Referring to the drawing the numeral indicates a portion of a casing or piece of furniture having a slidable drawer 9 provided with the improved guides 10. ln order -to accommodate the improved guides, the lower corner edges of the side vportions 11 of the drawer are beveled 0H inwardly downwardly ais-indicated by the numeral 12 andthe guides il()V which are triangular in form in cross section are mounted in the corner spaces 13 of the casing formed by the beveled edges. The upper angled faces 14 of ithe guides are spaced a slight distance from the beveled edges of the drawer to avoid contact therewith and anti-friction balls .15 carried by the guides Vand .projecting through openings 16 and 16 in the angled faces of the guides are engaged by said beveled drawer edges and centered and spaced between the rside faces 17 of the case. The medial openings 16 of the guides are of slotted or elongated form to permit the anti-friction balls to freely roll therein the length of movementthe drawer is pulled outwardly and thus prevent the frictional engagement of the balls with the end `edge portions of the angled faces forming the slots, while the end openings are of a size to hold the balls in position to support the drawer when the drawer is pulled outwardly. As the ball openings are of less width than the diameter of the balls the balls cannot be displaced or knocked out when the drawer is withdrawn'from the casing.
rll`he casings of the guides are formed of strips of metal 17 bent in right-angled form longitudinally of their lengths and the face portions 14C of said casing are secured to the angled lengths by bent vover edge portions 18 which overlap the side edges of the angled strip and form a slidable cover connection therewith. The base portions 19 of the guide casings are supported on the strip 20 forming part of the ordinary casing or furniture construction and the base portions 19 are provided with projecting .apertured ends 21 to receive nails or screws to firmly secure the casings to the strips 20.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 2 the upper sidecorner edges 22 of the drawer are beveled od in the same manner as the loweredges and the same kind of improved guides 10 are placed in the upper corners to center and space the drawer from the walls of the casing and thereby prevent binding of the parts.
lln the form shown in Fi 5 a Hat metal strip 23 mounted on a triangular shaped strip 24 is substituted Ior tne anti-friction guides to provide a less expensive guide having some of the advantages of the other forms.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved drawer guide is well adapted for the purpose desired.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In combination with a casing having a drawer opening and a slidable. drawer therefor having beveled edges, of guide members therefor comprising guide casings of triangular form in cross section and having openings-in their upper angled faces adjacent to the beveled drawer edges, some of said openin s being of elongated form to permit a rolingv movement of balls which project through the openings, .and balls mounted within the casings and engaging two sides ofy the casing and projecting through the openin s and beinglengaged by the adjacent bevele edges of t e drawer.
2. A drawer guide, comprising a strip of right-angled material, a cover strip therefor having angled side edges which slidably engage the side edges of the right-angled strip, said cover also having an elongated openin and a ball positioned withinthe space ormed by the angled strip and the cover and engaging two side walls of the angled strip and projecting through the cover opening, said cover opening being of less Width than the diameter ofthe ball.
In testimony whereof, I ax my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT HQ KROOS.
