IMPRovED WASHING-MACHINE.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HoRArIc N. THOMSON, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in lWashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of. this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figures 2, 3, 5, and 6, are details. My invention relates to washing-machines, and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the tub and operating-rollers, and in the means adopted for steaming the goods and keeping up the supply of hot water. v

The letter A of the drawings designatesthe boiler,

provided with a cover, B, made steam-tight by means of the packing-strip or ring a, of rubber.

Hooks b l) are attached to the side of the boiler,.and adapted to clamp the cover down upon the rim ofthe boiler.

C represents my wash-tub connected to thc boiler by a tube, c, which is attached thereto near the upper edge, in order to convey the steam only into the tub C. The' tube enters the wash-tub at the end thereof, and being then perforated to give vent to the steam, extends lengthwise along its bottom) l The wash-tub is usually made rectangular in form, with the endy slightly sloping outward and upward. When it is desired to boil the clothes therein, acover should be employed. y

D represents a large central roller, iuted horizontally, and designed to engage with the ntcd rollers E E, pivoted at each side of it, butsomewhat below its I axial line. The'roller D is pivotedimmediately to the sides ofthe tub, and its journals are kept in their seats by the cap-bars :l 1l, regulated by the set-screws The rollers E E are pivoted to the plates F F,'which are pivoted together and to the wall of the tub by the screw f, and are designed, when actuated by the expansible rubber spring H between their lower arms vh 7l, to operate in such a manuel as to press these roll ers upward and inward against the large roller D.

G G designate smaller smooth rollers, pivoted to the plate-hooks k vk, which are fastened to the walls of the tub. They are designed to support and guide the endless band K, of sail-clotlror other suitable mate rial, which passes between the central roller and the rollers E 1 l,aud serves as a vehicle to carry the goods from one end of the wash-tub to the other.

'lhe operating-crank Z is attached to the roller D. The goods being placed in one end of the tub upon the band, a sweep is given to the crank. The rollers will carry the goods down through the suds and up into the other end of the tub. A reverse movement of the rollers will convey them back to their original position. At each passage between the rollers the water is forced through the fabric until it is perfectly cleansed.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The washing-machine herein described, having rollers D E E, carriers G G, pivoted levers F F, endless band K, perforated tube c, and boiler A, substantially as shown and described.
