Description
CHARLES BEAN AND SEL DOGEE, OF EAST DOUGLAS, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 102,477, dated Mag/ 3, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pax-b of me same To all whom it 'may concern:
Beit known that we, CHARLES BEAN and SUEL LOGEE, of East Douglas, in the county of -WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement iuWashing-Machine; and we do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled iu the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming 'part of this specilication, in which-.-
Figurel is'a vert-ical section of our improved machine, taken through the line x x, iig. 2; and
Figure 2 is a top view of the same, the top being partly opened.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention has for its object to furnishl 'an .im-
proved washing-machine, which shall be simple in construction and eliective in operation, washing the clothesquickly and thoroughly, and without injiring them; and
It consists in the'constructiou and combination of the various parts of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the tub, which may bemade cylindrical or tapering, as may befdesired or convenient.
B C is the cover, which is made in.twoscmicircular parts..
The curved edge of the part B is inserted and secured 'in a groove in the upper part of the inner surface of the tub A, so that it may serve as a bearing for the upper part of the shaft D.
The curved edge of the movable part C of the cover slides or turns 4in a groove in the upper part of the inner surface of the tub A, and its straight edge overlaps the straight edge ofthe part B of said cover.
The shaft D passes through a hole iu the part C,
so as to serve as a pivot for said part C, so that it may be turned or slid over the part B, to open or uncover the machine.
The part C is moved back and forth by means of a knob or handle, c', attached to it.-
The lower end of the shaft D revolves iu a step or socket, formed in or attached to the center of the bottom ofthe tub A, and upon the upper end ofthe said shaft D is formed, or to it is attached, a crank, E, by means of which the machine is operated.
To the lower part of the shaft D, just above the bottom of the tub A, is attached a disk or circular plate, F, from the. upper surface of which projects a number of'pins, G, some of which are made longer than the others, and which are designed to support the clot-hes,'so that the water may have a free passage beneath and through them as they are swept through the water by the operation of the machine.-
H is a vtubular' Washer, through which the shaft D passes, and which is designed to keep the clothes from being wound upon or toruby the said shaft.
lI is a vertical board attached to brackets J, which .are attached to the side of the upper part ot' the tub A, and which is designed to serve as a couvenieut support for a wringer, it being provided. with an inclined apron, K, to conduct the water from the wriuger back into the tub A.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- VAn improved washing-machine, formed bythe combination of the tub A, semicircular stationary coverV B, semicircular movable cover C, shaft Dfcrank E, circular plate F, pins G, aud tubular washer H, with each other, said parts being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. v
CHARLES BEAN. SUEL LOGEE..
I Witnesses:
