To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUs'r C. RODATT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SashLocks or Fasteners, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and usefu improvements in sash looks or fasteners and my object is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and very effective in operation.
A further object is to provide a device comprising two hook members carried respectively by opposite sashes, one of which hook members is movable and adapted for engagement with the other.
A further object is to provide a device of this character wherein when the same is once set, it will thereafter be in condition to be automatically locked.
A still further object resides in the provision of means for the prevention of the opening of this device from the outside.
Another object of the invention resides in providing means for readily removing the effective portion of one of themembers, whereby the sashes may be opened and closed without any obstruction, whatsoever, and without affecting the remaining memher.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a window frame showing my improved device applied to use. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective of the section of the device which carries the locking bolt, and, Fig. 3 is a similar view of the locking bolt.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the lower frame of an upper sash and 2 the upper frame of a lower sash, upon which the sections of my improved sash fastener are adapted to be applied. Upon the frame 1 immediately adjacent the inner edge thereof is mounted a plate 3 having a vertically extending post 4 formed thereon, said post having the upper edge thereof beveled, as shown at 5, and provided with a notch 6 to form a substantial hook at the upper end thereof, which hook faces outwardly. Mounted on the frame 2 adjacent the outer edge thereof is an additional plate 7 provided with a threaded socket 8 which is adapted to receive the threaded end 9 of a second post 10. The post 10 has the upper portion thereof bifurcated to form the arms 11 and 12 and said arms are of a greater width than the width of the post, thereby forming shoulders or the like 13, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more particularly described. Pivotally mounted between the upper ends of said arms 11 and 12 is a locking bolt 14, the outer end of which is beveled, as at 15, and also provided with a notch 16, forming a substantial hook at that point, which hook faces outwardly, and the opposite end of said bolt is threaded, as shown at 17. The bolt 1a is pivoted between the arms of said post by extending a pin or the like 18 therethrough and the opening 19 in said bolt through which said pin extends is elongated, thereby allowing a slight movement of the bolt with respect to its pivotal point, and the threaded end 17 of said bolt is adapted to receive a thumb nut 20 which may be moved on said bolt to engage the post 10 and thereby adjust the movement of said bolt. The opening 19 in the bolt 14 is disposed to one side of the axial center of said bolt, whereby when in its normal position, the hook portion of said bolt will be disposed downwardly and opposite to the hook portion of the post 4, and in view of the beveled ends of said post and bolt 4 and 14:, respectively, said hook portions may be automatically engaged with one another when the sashes are moved into closed position.
In operation, the plate carrying the post 4 is mounted upon the lower frame of the upper sash, said plate being provided with openings, whereby the same may be secured thereto, by means of bolts or the like, and when properly positioned, the hook portion thereof will be facing outwardly. The plate 7' is then mounted on the upper frame of the lower sash adjacent the outer edge thereof and in alinement with said plate 3, and the post 10 carrying the locking bolt thereon is engaged with said plate 7 so that the hook on said bolt may be in position to engage the hook portion of. the post 4. As the sashes are moved to their closed positions, the beveled portions 5 and 15, respectively, of the post ff and bolt 14, will contact with one another, thereby moving the bolt in its elongated opening 19 and at the same time swinging the same outwardly, and when both sashes are tightly closed, the hook portions of said post and bolt will be engaged with one another, thereby preventing the movement of either sash. This device, it will be seen, is, therefore, an automatically locking sash fastener, and should it be desired, for any purpose whatsoever, to tighten the connection between the two hook portions, the thumb nut 20 may be turned on the bolt 14 to contact with the post 10. When allowed the full movement of the elongated opening 19, the connection between the two hook portions will be a loose one, but sufficient to prevent the movem'ent of either sash more than a fraction of an inch, and should it be desired to prevent the rattling of the sashes during stormy weather, the thumb nut may be turned to draw the bolt in tight engagement with the post 4:.
The meeting edges of the frames 1 and 2, as disclosed in my drawing, are shown beveled, but all frames are not so constructed, and with frames wherein the meeting edges are substantially vertical, it is possible, under ordinary conditions, for sash locks to be opened by the insertion of a thin strip between the meeting edges. I have provided, however, for the prevention of this in my device by the providing of the shoulders 13 at the junction of the arms 11 and 12 with the post 10, so that any strip or the like which may be inserted between the edges of the sashes for the purpose of unlocking this device, will contact with these shoulders and be prevented from further movement.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a sash lock or fastener comprising two sections, one of which carries a movable locking bolt, which sections are adapted to be automatically locked with the closing of the sashes.
Furthermore, it will be seen that by providing the locking bolt with an elongated opening, the same is capable of movement with respect to its pivotal point and by providing a thumb nut, said bolt may be adjusted in its locking engagement with the opposite section.
Furthermore, it will be seen that by the provision of the shoulders between the arms of the post and the body of the post, said shoulders being adapted to be disposed immediately over the meeting edges of the sash frames, all possibilities of the device being unlocked from outside will be eliminated.
It will still further be seen that this device is of such simple construction as to be inexpensively manufactured and thereby be sold to the general public at a very low figure.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plate, a post formed thereon, said post being provided at its upper end with a substantial hook portion; of an additional plate, a post removably mounted on said additional plate, the upper portion of said last referred to post being bifurcated to form arms, and a bolt pivotally mounted between the arms of said post, said bolt having one end thereof provided with a substantial hook portion adapted for engagement with said other hook portion.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plate having a vertical post formed thereon, said post having its upper face beveled outwardly from its upper to its lower edge and provided with a shoulder below said beveled port-ion; of an additional plate, a post removably secured thereto, said post being bifurcated on its upper end, a bolt pivotally mounted between said bifurcations and having a hook formed at one end thereof adapted to engage the shoulder of the opposite post, said removable post being also provided with a shoulder on one face thereof adapted to receive in engagement therewith the beveled upper face of the opposing post.

In a device of the class described, the combination with aplate having a vertical post formed thereon, said post having its upper face beveled outwardly from its upper to its lower edge and also provided with a shoulder immediately below the beveled upper face; of an additional plate, a vertical post removably engaged therewith, said post having its upper portion bifurcated, a bolt pivotally mounted between the bifurcations of said post and provided with a hook at inclination of the upper face of the opposing 10 one end thereof adapted to engage the post and adapted to receive the same in enshoulder of the opposite post, said bolt begagement therewith.
