Another object of the invention resides in j the provision of a wrench of that type employing a chain as one of the gripping elements, and improved means for retaining the chain in gripping engagement upon the periphery of a p1pe.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a wrench having primary gripping jaws, and a supplementary jaw for use'in the removal of pipe unions or nuts, new and novel means being provided for mounting said supplementary jaw.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accom-v panying drawings, in which Figure 1 1s a side elevation of my 1mproved wrench showing the same applied to a pipe when the same is to be used as a wrench; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the wrench clamped upon the pipe to hold the same stationary while the same is being threaded or for other purposes; Fig. 3 is an edge View; Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4L4; of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section showing the supplementary wrench jaw in position; Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the primary wrench jaws; and Fig. 8 is a similar view of the supplementary jaw.
Referring in detail to the drawings 5 designates a handle, one end of which is provided with the longitudinally disposed branch arms 6, said arms being integrally connected at their ends by means of the head 7. This head has an ear 8 formed upon its 'end to which one end of a link chain 9 is Specification of Letters Fatent.

pivotally connected. The opposed faces of the spaced arms 6 have shoulders 10 formed thereon. These shoulders are of rectangular form and are spaced from the inner connected ends of the arms 6. The. opposite edges of the shoulders 10 are provided with notches or recesses 11. The longitudinal walls of these recesses are curved, said re cesses having square inner end walls 11. The recesses in the lugs or shoulders 10 onthe arms 6 are adapted to receive the heads of the link pivots 9 and by curving the longitudinal walls of said recesses, said pivots may be easily and quickly disposed therein or moved out of said recesses without gripping or binding upon the walls thereof.
The opposite longitudinal edges of the arms 6 are also provided with lugs 12 which are adapted to be received between the spaced link bars of the chain to retain the chain upon the pipeand hold the same in gripping engagement therewith as the wrench handle is moved in a circular path to turn or rotate the pipe. Upon opposite sides of the head 7, the primary wrench jaws 13 are arranged, said jaws having concave serrated longitudinal edge portions 141, and the toothed divergently inclined outer edge portions 15.- The serrations or corrugations 14 of said wrench jaws extend in relatively opposite diagonal lines so that they will effectually prevent any rotation or turning movement of the pipe when the wrench is clamped upon the same. The inner ends of these wrench jaws have lugs 16 formed thereon to be received in notches or recesses 17 in the ends of the arms 6. A bolt 18 extends through coinciding openings in the jaws 13 and the head 7 and has a nut threaded upon its end to rigidly clamp said jaws in position upon the end of the handle.
When using the device as a wrench, the toothed edges 15 of the wrench jaws are engaged upon the periphery of the pipe and the chain 9 is passed around the pipe and engaged over one of the lugs 12 on one of the arms 6 of the handle as previously described. W'hen, however, the device is to be used simply to clamp the pipe and hold the same in position against turning movement, the concave serrated edge portions 1 1 of the wrench jaws are engaged with the pipe and the chain is disposed between the opposed arms 6 of the handle and the heads of one of the link pivots of the chain are engaged in the recesses of the opposed shoulders 10 whereby said chain is securely held in clamping engagement upon the pipe.
In the application of the wrench to such narrow objects as nuts or pipe couplings, the primary wrench aws 13 are ineffectual and a supplementary jaw 19 is therefore provided. This supplementary jaw is of similar form to the outer ends of the primary jaws and is provided upon its opposite inclined edges with the gripping teeth 20. Upon each face of this supplementary jaw a rib 21 is formed which is adapted to be received in the grooves or channels 22 provided in the opposed faces of the jaws 18. This supplementary jaw may be easily and quickly placed in position between the primary jaws or removed therefrom and by providing the same I eliminate the necessity of employing a large number of wrenches of different sizes for application to various objects differing in form and size and to which a single wrench of common form now in general use is not adapted.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and manner of application of my improved wrench in the varoius uses thereof will be fully understood.
The device has a wide range of utility, is comparatively simple in its construction, and is extremely efficient and durable in prac tical use. The same may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from pipes, nuts and various other objects.
It will of course be understood that the device may be made of various sizes and constructed from any desired material.
Owing to the few parts employed and their simple construction, it will be obvious that the wrench may be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the various parts, it will be understood that the invention is susceptible of considerable modification in the form and proportions thereof without departing from the essential features or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is In a wrench of the class described, the combination of a handle having spaced arms formed on one end, a head integrally connecting said arms, jaws arranged upon opposite sides of said head and removably secured thereto, one end of each of the jaws having a lug formed thereon to be received in a recess provided in the end of the arms, the outer ends of said jaws being tapered and toothed upon their opposite edges, the inner longitudinal edge portion of said jaws being concave and serrated, the serrations on said jaws extending in opposite diagonal lines with relation to each other, a link chain pivotally connected to said head, shoulders formed upon the opposed faces of said spaced arms and having recesses in their opposite edges to receive the link pivots of said chain and retain the chain in gripping engagement upon a pipe.
