Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID C. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilkeson, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Spool and Implement Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device for holding articles used in sewing, and has for its object to provide a neat, simple, and efiicient article which may be attached to the dress, or suspended from a cord or ribbon, for holding in compact and convenient form a spool of thread, a thimble, needles and pins, and to be also provided with a thread tension and thread-cutting means.

With this object in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a side view; Fig. 4 is a rear view; and Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.

Like reference characters are used for the same parts in all the figures.

In the accompanying drawing the numeral 10 indicates a back plate, preferably of thin metal, provided near its lower end with two parallel brackets 11, projecting forwardly from the edges of the plate, and formed each with a substantially horizontal recess 12 in its forward edge, preferably nearer the bottom than the top of the bracket. The recesses 12 form seats for a shaft 13 on which a spool is to be carried, and which may have a pintle 14 on each end to enter said recesses. The shaft is retained in place by means of a spring 15, here shown as made of wire, fastened on the outer side of each bracket 11, extending along its bottom edge to the front and thence by a return bend it lies along the lower edge of the recess 12 to the rear thereof, where it is formed into a semicircular loop 16 to embrace the pintle 14. In front of each pintle the spring 15 is bent upwardly to form a hump 17 for the purpose of retaining the shaft in place.

Through the center of the plate 10, near the top, is a hole 18 by means of which the device may be suspended from a nail or hook; while holes 19 in the corners afford means for attachment of a ribbon, cord,

from the bottom of the plate 10 is a tongue 21 having a small eye 22 therein through which the thread from the spool passes. A slit 23 extends from the eye 22 to the edge of the tongue for directing the thread into the eye.

Between the brackets 11 close to the back plate 10 is a second plate 24 parallel to the plate 10, and about as wide as said brackets. The plate 24 in the present construction of the device extends from bracket to bracket and is fastened in place by end projections 25 passed through slots 26 in the brackets, and their ends folded around the upwardly projecting rear ends of the springs 15. Filling the space between the plates 10 and 24 is a strip of felt or other suitable material 27 to hold pins 28 passed thereinto through the slots 26. A thimble is held on the device by an upwardly projecting spring finger 29 fastened on the plate 24 at the top and bearing at its free end with some force against the back plate 10, the terminal 30 of said finger being bent away from the plate to permit the edge of a thimble 31 passing between the finger and the plate and held secure by the resilient force of the finger.

The plate 24 has a downwardly projecting strip 32 in spring contact with the tongue 21, the lower end of said strip being V- notched and just covering or partly covering the eye 22 in the tongue to form a tension for the thread from the spool 33. If it be desired to carry a needle case, the strip 32 may be bent outwardly, as at 34, to form a support into which the needle case 35 may be slipped.

The spool shaft 13 is held securely in the recesses 12 by the humps 17 on the springs 15, but may be removed with ease. If it be desired to change the spool 33 the latter is grasped by the fingers and drawn out of the recesses, the pressure of the shaft pintles on the humps depressing them so that said pintles may pass. After a spool has been slipped on the shaft the latter is returned to place, the pintles again depressing the humps until the pintles are seated in the loops 16. The thread is then passed under the strip 32 and into the eye through the slit 23. On the upper edge of one or both brackets 11 is a notch 36 which forms a cutter for the thread when a length has been drawn from the spool.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a back plate provided with parallel brackets adapted to support a spool shaft and having openings where they join said back plate, of a second plate between said brackets parallel to the back plate and in close relation thereto, and puncturable material between said plates to which access may be had through said openings in the brackets.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a back plate provided with parallel brackets adapted to support a spool shaft and having openings where they oin said back plate, of a second plate between said brackets parallel to the back plate and in close relation thereto, said plate being held in place by pro ections engaging said openings in the bracket, puncturable material between said plates to receive pins insorted through the openings in said brackets, and a spring finger on said second plate adapted to bear on the back plate over which finger a thimble may be slipped and held:

by the resiliency of said finger.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a back plate provided with parallel forwardly projecting integral brackets, having recesses to receive the ends of the spool shaft, and a slot in each bracket where it joins the back plate, a second plate between said brackets held in place by projections extending through said slots and folded, a spool shaft fitted to said recesses, and a spring secured in each of said folded projections formed with a hump so disposed as to yieldably retain an end of said shaft in the recesses but permit the withdrawal and insertion of said shaft.

spool shaft and having a downwardly extending tongue formed with a thread eye, of a second plate between said brackets parallel to the back plate and in close relation thereto connected to said bracket by lateral projections, and a strip integral with said second plate projecting downwardly therefrom and bearing lightly on said tongue to provide a tension for the spool thread passing tl'irough the eye in the tongue.

In a device of the class described, the combination with a back plate provided with parallel forwardly projecting brackets ing a downwardly extending tongue formed with a thread eye, of a second plate between said brackets parallel to the back plate and in close relation thereto, a strip projecting downwardly from said second plate and bearing lightly on said tongue to provide a tension for the spool thread passing through the eye in the tongue, and a loop formed in said strip to receive a needle case.

6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a back plate provided with parallel forwardly projecting brackets adapted to support a removable spool shaft and having a downwardly extending tongue formed with a thread eye, of a second plate between said brackets parallel to said back plate and in close relation thereto, puncturable material between said plates to receive pins inserted through slots in said brackets, a spring finger on said second plate adapted to bear on the back plate and frictionally hold a thimble against said back plate, a strip projecting downwardly from said second plate and bearing lightly on said tongue to provide a tension for the spool thread passing through the eye in the tongue, and a loop formed in said strip to receive a needle case.
