Be it known that 1 FRANK E. KIN NEY a State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Device for Use in Crocheting and other \Vork, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My device relates to a means for holding a spool of yarn, silk, or the like, and for drawing the thread from the spool under proper tension.

The general object of the invention is to provide a device of the indicated class adapted to be properly sustained on the hand of the user, and-having means attachable to a finger of the hand for manipulating the thread and tensioning the same.

The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, showing the same applied to a hand; Fig. 2 is a front view of the device; Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 4 is a plan view.

In carrying out my invention abase member is provided, designated generally by the numeral 10, adapted to be supported on the back of the hand. and the same is given opposite bends 11 for affording a large base surface and for receiving an elastic handband 12 which is suitably threaded through the bends of the base.

At the ends, the wire, from which the device is preferably formed, is provided with standardsl3 joined to the base by an overhanging member 10 which overlies the band 12 and serves to retain the base in position on the band. At the upper end the standards 13 are given lateral bends and returned on themselves and provide friction members 14, adapted to yieldingly engage the ends of a spool A. The terminals of the wire extend horizontally toward each other forming members, 15, 16, adapted to be en tered in the bore of a spool.

A clamp bar 17 is pivotally connected at one end as at 18 with one standard 13, and extends beyond the opposite standard. The free end of the clamp bar 17 is formed with crimps or corrugations 19, any one of which Specification of Letters Patent.

may beengaged with the adjacent standard 13 according to the size of the spool A. The clamp bar thus serves to hold the standards againstseparation'and with the spool revolubly mounted on the members, 15, 16, and with the bends 14 bearing against the ends of the spool with sufficient friction to prevent a too free rotation thereof in response to a pull on the thread or yarn a.

Extending forwardly from the base 10 is a resilient finger bar 20 having a loop 21 at its rear end slidably and rockably connecting the said bar with the base. The loop 21 embraces a member 11 of the bends 11 and said member is raised to afford clearance of the loop 21 and permit freedom of movement thereof on the base. At the front end the finger bar :20 is formed with a ring 22 within which is secured, by stitching orthe like, an elastic lining or finger sleeve 23,

adapted to be slipped with thering on a finger of the hand.

Suitable guides are formed for the thread A, there being preferably, a guide-eye 24 on the finger bar 20 at the base, a second guideeye 25 at the approximate center of the finger bar and a guide-eye 26 on the ring 22, adjacent to the finger bar.

The described device is placed on the back of the hand as shown in Fig. 1 with the elastic band 22 encircling the hand at the palm.

The firm engagement of the bar 20 with the finger, the resiliency of the said bar. and its connection with the base permit of the bar being flexed, and raised and lowered to place the yarn or silk aunder tension, it being understood that the partly finished work is gripped between the ends of first finger and thumb, while the finger ring 22 is applied to the second finger. Thus, the thread may bedrawn from the spool A and disposed as may be called for by the operations of the crocheting needle or knitting needles, or the manipulation of a tatting shuttle, while at i all times the thread is held under necessary tension.

It is to be understood that the resiliency of the material entering into the crimped 0r corrugated base 10 and standards 13 constitute the same tension members in themselves tending to frictionally hold the spool in position, that is to say, the bends 11 of the base tend to contract as the standards 13 are separated to enter the ends thereof in the spool and this, with the inherent resiliency of the standards, insures an effective friction against the spool. Also, the bends 1A are of such a character that they will have frictional engagement with the spool only near the periphery of the latter and directly adjacent to the terminals 15, 16; that is to say, the lateral and return bent members forming the bends are not parallel but slightly converge adjacent to the standards 13 and terminals 15, 16.

The resilient finger bar 20 is bowed outwardly, relatively to the base and finger ring so that when the ring is in position on the finger, the finger bar will be bowed outwardly with respect to the axis of the ring so as to maintain the thread out of contact with the hand of the user to prevent soiling of the thread.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A device of the class described including a base, standards on said base, lateral friction bends in said standards adapted to bear against the ends of a spool, terminals on the standards disposed toward each other and adapted to be entered in the bore of the spool, a hand-band engaging with said base and adapted to receive the hand of the user, and a finger bar slidably connected at its rear end with the said base for forward and backward bodily movement thereon, and having a finger ring at the front thereof, said base having a longitudinally disposed guide member on which the finger bar has its sliding movement.

2. A device of the class described including a spool support, means to hold the said support on the hand, a forwardly extending resilient finger bar connected with said base and provided with a finger-engaging memher at the front end, said finger bar having means to guide the thread.

3. A device of the class described, including a spool support, means to hold the said support on the hand at the back thereof, and a resilient finger bar slidably connected with the said support and extending forwardly therefrom, the said finger bar having means for engagement of the forward end thereof by a finger of the user and having means to guide the thread.

4:. A device of the class described including a base having bends alternating in forward and rearward directions, spool sup,

A device of the class described including a base, means to hold said base to the hand of the user, standards rising from said base and provided with means at their upper ends to hold a spool, a clamp bar swingingly connected with one standard and formed with corrugations at the other end adapted to engage the adjacent standard, and afinger bar connected with the said base and extending forwardly therefrom, said finger bar having means at its front endto receive a finger of the user and having thread-guiding means. a

6. A device of the class described, including a spool support, means to hold said support on the hand of the user, a resilient finger bar connected with the said support and extending forwardly therefrom, a finger ring on the said bar at the front, and thread guiding means on the said finger and ring, the said finger bar being bowed outward relatively to the axis of the ring to maintain the thread out of contact with the hand of the user.
