WITNESSES A TTOHNE K8,.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT E. THORNHILL, OF LYONS, NEW YORK.
PEN 0R PENCIL CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,440, dated November 1, 1892.
Application filed February 17, 1892- Serial No. 421, (N 111 1 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT EDWARD THORNHILL, of Lyons, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pen or Pencil Carrier, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved device in use, the View being taken from the thumb side of the hand. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same, taken from the opposite side of the hand; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device detached from the hand. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and elfective device for carrying and guiding a pencil or pen used for writing.
My invention consists in a carrier made of wire in the form of a V-shaped loop, the arms of the loop having at their extremities eyes for receiving the pencil or penholder, one of the arms being provided with an eye for receiving the fourth finger and an ofiset or loop for receiving the first finger, all as will be hereinafter more fully described. The wire which is used for the construction of my improved carrier is bent to form an irregular V- shaped loop A, having arms a b. At the extremities of these arms are formed eyes 0 c for receiving the pencil or penholder. The arm a. is provided with a lateral bend or loop 61 adjoining the eye a for receiving the first finger of the hand, and between the said loop 01 and the extremity of the loop Athere is an eye 6, which is formed by bending the wire into a helical coil. The extremity of the loop beyond the said eye is twisted and bent downward slightly from the general plane of the loop, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to form a rest for the carrier, which slides in contact with the surface which is being written upon. Where the carrier is used for writing upon a slate, a covering f, of chamois-skin or other soft material, is placed on the extremity of the loop.
Although I have described my improved pen or pencil carrier as being made of wire and having eyes formed in the extremities of the loop A, I do not limit or confine myself to this construction, as the device may be cast or stamped, and the extremities of the arms of the loop may be provided with suitable clamps for holdingthe pencil or penholder.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 7 1. Apen or pencil carrier formed with two arms, one provided with a loop for the forefinger and an eye for the fourth finger and the other arm being arranged as a rest for the ends of all of the fingers, the two arms being adapted to receive and hold a pencil or penholder, substantially as specified.
2. A pencil-carrier formed of a loop having at the extremities of its arms eyes for receiving the pencil or penholder and provided with a loop for receiving the forefinger and an eye for receiving the fourth finger, substantially as specified.
3. A pen or pencil carrier formed of a loop for the forefinger, an eye for the fourth finger, and provided with a downwardly-turned end having at the extremities of its arms holes for the pencil or penholder, substantially as specifie d.
