TROWEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 30, 1912.
Application filed June 27, 1910. Serial No. 569,034.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bony C. Connmvon, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tiflin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trowels; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in trowels for plastering and similar purposes.
One object of this invention is to provide a trowel of this description having such an arrangement of parts that the trowel may be adjusted to meet the various contingencies which arise in plastering and also may be adjusted to suit the particular preference of the user in the matter of balance, which of course is determined by the position of the handle of the trowel on the blade of the trowel.
A further object of my invention is to provide a trowel the blade of which may be replaced from time to time when worn out, thereby saving the cost of an entire new trowel.
With these objects in view and with the intention of securing further advantages hereinafter disclosed my invention consists in providing a trowel having the handle mounted thereon so that it is capable of being adjusted longitudinally of the blade or detached therefrom, as desired.
My invention also consists in the features of construction and combination of parts as described in the specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a top plan of a trowel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on line 83, Fig. 2. Fig. l is a front end view of the device showing the parts detached.
Again referring to the drawings 5 represents the blade of the trowel, and as is usual in trowels of this description the blade consists of a thin rectangular shaped plate of steel. At the center of the blade 5, and extending longitudinally thereof, is arranged a rib 6 which, as shown in the construction illustrated, is made by riveting a metal bar to the blade. The rib 6 is rounded on the top and the sides slope inwardly and downwardly, the smallest dimensions of the bar being where it is secured to the blade. The handle comprises a shank-portion 8 having the usual grip piece 9 mounted thereon and arranged approximately at a right angle thereto. The sides of the shank portion 8 are preferably fiat and at each side of the shank portion is mounted a jaw 10 which is formed entirely independent of the shank 14. These jaws 10 extend down below the end of the shank a sutlicient distance to engage the rib 6, the inner faces of said jaws being adapted to correspond to the shape of the sides of the rib. A bolt or rivet 11 is passed through the said jaws and through the shank and serves to secure the jaws to the shank and clamp the jaws against the rib on the blade. If the faces of the jaws become worn where they engage the rib 6 the bolt 11 can be taken out and the jaws removed from the shank portion. The faces of the jaws where they abut against the flat sides of the shank portion can then be ground and when replaced on the shank portion the jaws will again tightly engage the rib.
The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated. The handle of the trowel being readily adjustable along the blade of the trowel permits the handle to be located on the blade at the point most suitable for the work which is being done, as for instance, if it is desired to operate behind a pipe or other obstruction the handle can be placed at one end of the blade thereby allowing practically the full blade to be inserted behind the pipe or other obstruction. Also even when working under normal conditions difierent operators prefer different locations for the handle relative to the end of the blade to secure the balance to which they are accustomed or find most advantageous, and this they can readily secure for themselves with my arrangement. Again in case the blade becomes worn the handle can be detached and secured to a new blade, thus saving the cost of an entirely new tool and as many operators shape the grip piece to conform to their own hands, by being able to use their old handles, they are saved the necessity of having to shape the grip piece on new handles.
WVhat I claim is,
In a device of the character indicated, the
combination of a blade provided with a oen-.
trally arranged longitudinally extending rib larger at its top than at its base and a handle comprising a grip piece, a shank portion having flat sides and a detachable jaw arranged ateach side of said shank portion and extending down below said shank portion, the inner face of each jaw being shaped to conform to the shape of the side of the said rib and a bolt extending through o the said shank and the said jaws so as to clamp said jaws against said rib, substan tially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I sign the foregoing specification, in the presence of two 1-1 witnesses.
