To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED C. BANKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers, of which the of carpenters, cabinet makers, wheel and vehicle builders, and other wood working artisans, and to the use of machinists for scrap ing bearings, plumbers and tinners for scraping soldered joints, and also to the use of butchers for resurfacing the cutting blocks.

The object of the invention is to simplify the structure as well as the means or mode of operation of such devices, whereby they will not only be cheapened in construction, but will be'more efficient in use, durable and substantial and unlikely to get out of repair.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device in which the scraper blade is adjustable to various relative positions, to accommodate the hand of the operator and the position in which the tool is used.

A further object is to provide an adjustable hand rest for the tool, and to provide means whereby the clamping stud will be interchangeable, enabling it to be readily replaced in case of damage or when worn.

With the above primary and other incidental objects in View, as will more fully appear in the specification, the invention consists of the features of construction, the parts and combinations thereof, and the mode of operation or their equivalents as hereinafter described, set forth in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the simple tool, Fig. 2, is a sectional view thereof, Fig. 3, is an elevation of the innerclamping plate and the adjustable handle, Fig. 4:, is a detailed view on the interchangeable clamping stud, Fig. 5, is a rear view of the inner clamping plate, showing the detachable hand socket, Fig. 6,

Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the flat steel scraper blade or hit adjustably clamped between the front and rear clamping plates 2 and 3. The upper edge of the bit is slightly curved or ofiset as shown at 4:, to engage any one of the series of transverse grooves 5, in the inner face of the clamping plate 3. Formed integral with the rear clamping plate 3 is the rearward projecting ferrule or socket 6, in which is secured ahandle or shaft 7. Centrally located in the rear clamping plate 3, and communicating with the interior of the socket 6, is a key hole shaped opening, the circular portion 8 of which is of sufficient size to admit the head 9 of a square shouldered bolt 10 of ordinary construct-ion. The lower or slot portion of the opening is of sufficient proportion to admit the squared portion 12 of the bolt 10 and prevent the bolt turning therein. The bolt 10 projectsthrough a suitable opening in the front clamping plate 2 and carries the thumb or butterfly nut 13. By the adjustment of the butterfly nut 13 the clamping plates 2 and 3 are caused to approach each other and securely grip the scraper blade 1, intermediate said plates. Projecting from the inner face of the outermost clamping plate 2, adjacent tothe upper end thereof is a stud 14 engaging in an opening or recess 15 in the inner face of the innermost clamping plate 3.

An adjustable hand rest is provided by which pressure may be applied to the tool, comprising a handle portion '16, from which projects a blade 17, having therein" a slot 18, engaging over the stud 14 of the clamping plate 2. The blade 17 of the hand rest projects between the upper edges of the clamping plates 2 and 3, the clamping plate 2 being recessed for the reception thereof. The hand rest is secured in its adjusted position by the adjustment of the butterfly nut 13, which at the same time secures the scraper blade 1 in. its position. Byreleasing the nut 13, the hand rest 16 may be adjusted upward or downward within the limit of the slot 18, and at the same time the scraper blade 1 to be adjusted to expose cess as shown in Fig. 2. The lug 19 will limit the inward adjustment of the bit or scraper 1, and prevent the bit being driven against the clamping stud 10 by heavy pressure during the use of the tool or by striking it against the block to free it {from refuse. The lug 19- projectswithin the recess of the clamping plate -2beyond the inner face of said clamping plate.

It sometimes happens that in order to reach an inconvenient position, it is desirable that the blade project fromthe side of the implement as shown in dotted lines in a Fig. 1. Inorder thatthe bit or scraper 1 may be'conveniently secured in this position there are provided in addition to the transverse grooves 5, vertical grooves 20 for the engagement of the inturned edge of the bit or scraper 1, when'located in the lateral position.

The series of vertical grooves 20 will be found desirable also for certain classes of Work, wherein it is desired to use a plurality of narrowbits spaced apart in the holder, or to use a plurality of spikes or points. This is particularly true when the tool is to be used as a roughing implement upon a glue joint or when used as a defacing device to destroy markings on boxes or barrels or for similar purposes, or for cutting or scoring veneer.

By the construction hereindescribed the tool is greatly cheapened through the fact that the clamping stud 10 may be an ordinary stock bolt, which may readily be re-' placed in case of wear or injury. The use of the detachable bolt 10 reduces the cost of manufacture to minimum. .The socket portion 6 may be either formed integral with the rear clamping plate 3, as shown in Fig. 2, or it may be a separate member secured to the rear plate 3 by screws 21 as shown in om the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a hand tool of the character described, possessin the particular features of advantage before enumerated as 'desirablebut which obviously is susceptlble of modification in its form,

proportion, detail construction and arrangement of parts, without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention I claim:

1. In a hand tool handle, clamping plates carried thereby, a bit adj ustably heldby said clamping plates, a socket for said handle projecting from the flat face of one of the clamping plates having an opening thereinto' through said clamping plate, an adjusting bolt for the clamp plates detachably engaged in the opening in the handle socket, substantially as specified.

'2. In a hand tool, a handle, clamping members carried thereby, a bit adjustably held between the clamping members, a hand rest, a projecting shank on said hand rest extending between and adjustably held by the clamping members, substantially as specified.

3. In a hand tool, a handle, clamping members carried thereby, one of the clamping members having therein two series of intersecting grooves, angularly arranged With each other, a bit projecting between the clamping members having its inner edge oflset, whereby it may engage any one of the grooves of either series, whereby the bit may be adjusted to different angular positions, substantially as specified.

5. In a handtool, clamping plates, a bit adjustably held between said clamping plates, a hollow boss projecting from one of the clamping plates, the said clamping plate having an opening therein into the. interior members, substantially as speci of said hollow boss, the opening being irregular in form and including a contracted extension, a handle shaft engaged in the hollow boss, a, clamping bolt the head of which maybe introduced through the opening in the clamping plate into the interior of the hollow boss, the shank of the bolt being adapted to be engaged inthe contracted extension of the opening, said bolt extending through the otherclampin'g plate and a clamp nut carried thereby, substantially as specified.

6.
