SAW-SET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Application filed December 29, 1910. Serial No. 599,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. GARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Uhavies, in the county of Dekalb, State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to saw sets and the object of the invention resides in the provisions of a device of this character in which the teeth of the saw are clamped while the blade is bent at an angle with the station arily secured teeth, thereby effecting the angular olfset of said teeth.
A primary object of the invention is to produce a device of the character above described which may be simply constructed and eflicient in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists primarily in a stock member, having a shoulder formed on one face intermediate the length thereof, a saw tooth retaining loop extending outwardly from the face on the higher side of said shoulder, a stop secured to confront the lower end of said loop, an angular adjustment screw threaded into an aperture in a portion of said stock and means for applying force to the saw body to press the same against said angular adjustment screw.
The invention further consists in a certain construction, combination and arrangement of parts and details as is hereinafter more particularly described, specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which show a preferred embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings which are attached to and form a part of this application, Figure l is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line :22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to these views, in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, 1 indicates the stock, which comprises the reversely curved handle portion here designated 2 and the head portion designated 3, said head being inclined at an angle to the body portion.
Referring to the inner face of the head portion by the numeral at it will be seen that intermediate the length thereof the metal or material of which the stock is formed is reduced to form the transverse shoulder 5.
Referring to the sectional view of Fig. 3 it will be seen that the side faces of the head portions are provided with the parallel slots here designated 6 and secured in these slots by means of a rivet T or son1e,other suitable fastening is the loop member which as a whole will be designated by 8. This loop is made up of two portions, an outer reinforcing portion herc designated 9 and preferably formed of a good grade of steel, and an'inner or lining portion 10 which is preferably of copper, soft bronze orother soft metal. In the curve which joins the handle and head portions of the stocks a longitudinal aperture here designated 11 is formed, this aperture being slightly tapered inwardly, and introduced into the aperture is the taper plug 12 the end of which here designated 13 is preferably of some soft material, wood or soft metal. As shown in the drawings this end confronts the lower opening of the loop 8 and may be adjusted or spaced therefrom by driving it into or out of the slightly tapered aperture. If preferred it will be readily understood that this plug may be threaded into a tapped opening. Adjacent the outer end of the head a drilled opening 14 is formed therein, said opening being tapped for the insertion of the thumb screw designated 15, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
In order to use the device above described, the saw blade is arranged vertically or substantially parallel to the head portion 3, one of the teeth of the saw edge being inserted under the loop 8. The blade of the saw is then by some suitable force applying means bent backward until the same contacts with the set screw or adjusting screw, and it will be seen that the angular movement of the blade with reference to the tooth may be thus adjusted by turnin the said set screw into or out of the tapped aperture. The present force applying means comprises a curved lever generally designated as 20 having the U-shaped end 21, said lever being pivoted at 22 to the head member of the stock, and it will be seen that by pressing the handles of the lever and of the stock toward each other the blade of the saw may be bent inwardly until it contacts with the set screw as above described, thus setting or bending the tooth of the saw along the edge of the shoulder 5. The purpose of the plug 12 is to form a rest for the point of the saw tooth which will not dull the same, and it is also desirable as above stated that the internal lining of the loop member should be of a soft material in order not to dull the longitudinal edges of the saw tooth.
The improved device is intended primarily for use with the eon'iparatively heavy double cut saws, but it will readily be understood that by changing the form and proportion of the loop and shoulder members, the device may be adapted to carpentefs saws of any description.
hat I claim is;
1. In a saw set, the combination with a stock having a shoulder formed on one face thereof, of a saw tooth, retaining loop secured to said stock and adapted to be positioned over and to retain a saw tooth with its root portion parallel to said shoulder, an adjusting screw threaded into a. tapped aperture in said stock, said screw projecting upwardly from said first named face, and means for applying force to the blade of said saw to rotate said blade about the root of said tooth as an axis.
In a. saw set, the combination with a stock having a. transverse shoulder formed on one face thereof, of a saw tooth retaining loop adapted to secure a saw tooth with its root portion lying over said shoulder, said loop being lined with soft metal an adj listing screw threaded into a tapped aperture in said stock and extending outwardly from said first named face, an adjustable stop secured in said stock and confronting the outer opening of said loop, and a lever pivoted to said stock and adapted to apply force to said blade to rotate the same with relation to said tooth.
3. A. saw set, comprising a reversely curved handle portion terminating at one end in a head portion forming a stock, said stock being cut away intermediate its length to form a transverse shoulder, a saw tooth engaging loop secured to said stock adjacent said shoulder, an adjusting screw threaded into a tapped aperture in the free end of said stock and extending outwardly therefrom, an adjustable plug passed through an aperture in said arm and with its outer end opposed and adjacent to said loop, and a lever pivoted to said stock adjacent the arm end thereof and co-acting with said arm to form handles, said lever having a U-shaped terminal extending beyond the pivotal point and adapted to bear against the blade of the saw to swing the same when the handles are moved toward each other.
in testimony whereof, I atiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
h WILLIAM R. 2 GARRETT.
