Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 21, 1914. Serial No. 839,974,.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, ALBERT 'S. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and The invention has for its general objects.
to improve and simplify the construction of devices of the character referred to so as to be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, thoroughly reliable and eflicient in use and embodying a novel arrangement of devices for enabling the implement to be used in a variety of ways.
A further object of the invention is the pro-vision of an ice tool having a novel arrangement of blades for chipping and shaving ice, the shaving blade being carried by or integral with and struck out from the chipper blade and disposed in a slight angle thereto and in a direction away from the teeth of the chipper blade, so that in using the shaver the tips of the chipper teeth will slide on the block of ice and serve to guide the position of the tool during the shaving stroke, so that too deep a cut of the shaving blade is prevented.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an implement in which the pick, chipper and shaver are made of a single piece of sheet metal with gripping members fastened thereto at a point between the pick and chipper devices,so as to form an intermediate or central handle.
/Vith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates certain embodiments of the in vention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the-views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the implement; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; and Fig.3 is a plan view of "a modified form of implement. Referring to the drawing, he implement is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as consisting of a pick 1,chipper 2 and shaver 3, all of which are parts of a single-piece body A, cut from sheet 'metal steel stock of suitable gage.
, The chipper 2 comprises a flat blade which.
is formed at one end with a plurality. of teeth or serrations ,4, and from the blade the body tapers into a shank- 5;that terminates in the pick point 1. The shaver 3 is in the form of a blade lying within the borders of the chipper blade 2, and is struck out therefrom with the portion 6 integral withthe chipper blade. The shaving blade 3 is rectangular and is disposed at a slight angle to the plane of the blade 2 with its cutting edge 7 extending in a direction opposite to the teeth 4-, there being an obtuse angle 8 between the i blade 3 and tooth portion of the blade 2 and an acute angle 9 between the shaving blade 3 and the inner portion of the blade 2, as.
clearly shown in Fig. 2.
To enable a convenient grip to be had on the implement the body A is provided with a handle B which is made in two symmetrical sections 10 and 11 of wood or other suitable material, and fitted to the shank 5 where the same joins the blade 2, and these sections 10 and 11 are secured together by rivets 12 which pass through the sections and through openings in the shank 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 2 the implement is shown in the operation of shaving ice, which operation is performed by the user gripping the handle Band placing the tips of the teeth 4: and the edge 7 of the blade 2 on the top of the block of ice, and while so held the implement is drawn in the direction in which the blade 3 extends, that is to say, toward the right, Fig. 2, and the shaved ice passes up the blade 3 and through the opening 3 left in the blade 2 by the punching out of the blade 3. The serrated part of the blade 2 serves as a guide during the shaving stroke of the tool and prevents the shaving blade from cutting too deep into the ice. The use of the chipper and pick portions of the implement are well understood.
In the form of the implement shown in Fig. 3 the blade 2" is constructed like the blade in Fig. i, and as the shaving blade 3*;
Patented Oct. 20, 1914. a
and instead of the implement embodying an ice pick a wooden or other handle 3 is fastened to the blade 2 and on the handle is a crushing or cracking hammer 14: of usual construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combined ice shaver and chipper consisting of a handle, a main blade having a transversely arranged set of chipping .teeth and also having an opening disposed between said teeth and handle, and a shaving blade projecting at an angle from the edge of the opening nearest the teeth and dis posed at an acute angle to the portion of the main blade between the opening and handle and at an obtuse angle to the portion of the main blade between the said opening and set of chipping teeth.
2. An implement of the class described comprising a handle, a chipper blade connected therewith, and a shaving blade formed integral with the chipper blade and lying within the borders thereof, said shaving blade being struck out from the chipper blade and set at an' angle thereto and having its cutting edge extending toward the handle, the portion of the chipper blade that extends from the shaving blade in a direction away from the handle being disposed in approximately the same plane with the portion of the blade between the shaving blade and the handle, whereby the operative portion of the chipper blade serves as a guide by engaging a block of ice while the shaving blade is in use.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT S. CARTER.
