Specification of Letters Patent.
. mienten sept. 1o, 19h52.
Application filed May 13, l 907. Serial No. 374,399.
To all whom 'it muy Hmmm:
Be it known lhnl l` Enth-in lIiLt \\'.\|.'rn.\', n cilizcnnl i the United Stilles, und n resident of Minellc, in the l County of Baldwin :1nd Sulle of Alabama. huye invented a new and Improved Tnrpenline-lliuI;` of which the following is n lull, clerir, :ind exnf-l descriplion.
This invention relatos lo turpenline hacks.
The objelt ol the invention is to provide :i simple, Strong and durable turpenline hiuk. which is ellicicn in operation and inexpensive to nininllnr'lnre, and which presents n reversible lil-ndr: having n plnrnlity ol 5 Cutting edges.
A further object ol the imfentinnkis lo provide :i turpentine hack having n stock of-:nitnble lorin and Weight nud a removable, reversible V-shaped=rblnde having opposite cutting edges, nod suitably ser'iired to the stock. g
The invention consists in theconstriu-tion und com bination of parts to be more inllfdescrilled liereiirlter and particularly set forth in the claims. if
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a pnrt o this speeilimtion, .in-Which similar characters of reference indicate eorresphiding parts in both the views, and in which i.,
Figure 1 is n side elevation ol the lnrpenlive lnuk. showing pau-ts broken away; and `Fig. 2 is verl im] cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig.
Before proceeding to a more detailedcxphinruinn of my invention it should be understood that in g'alheciny turpentine it is r-nstrnnnry to gash or box the. lrees to permit the flow ol' #rude lurpenline therefrom. VlheV gashe may be cul. into the bnrk ol the tree by any Snilx" able instrument bnl preferably by n lurpenline hack having a 11T-shaped binde adapted to form n gash o1' suitable depth and width. ln the lurpenline hin-lis usually employed the blade has but. n single vulling edge and if the lutter should be drilled or broken for any rene son, it may cause considerable delay as the opt-ml ion ol boxing the trees is uilen performed nl n vonsidernble distance from the lurponline camp or nlher source of Supply. To provide a turpentine hack of ellcient form and Simple construction and in the sinne linie to obviate the loss of time incident to the breaking of the blade, I provide a V-shziped blade having two rotting edges at the opposite sides, the blade being reversible. In the operation oi the hack the stock is held in the hands of the operator and the blade is drawn along the bark of the tree, the edge being inward, toward the hand of the operator.` l*1 or this purpose it is necessary to provide a reversible blade in my invention, in case Referring more prtiqrlarly to the drawings, reprellandle is preferably formed ol malleable iron or other suitable metal and has a. longitudinal recess 2 therein to cess which may be ofiny depth, the weight of the handle van be adjusted to suit the operator. At the end, the stof-lc is formed into i annular extension lo constilule n handle knob 3. itt the opposite end, the stock i f* has n transverse opening 4, therethrough. A set-serex 5 is arranged at the end of the stock in n suitably threaded opening and extends through into the opening 4 longitudinally oi the stock.
I provide n blade linng dshank 'i preferably of rectangular rross seetion, nl'd adapted to he arranged loosely in the opening 4 o the steek which prefernbly is also of rectangular cross-section. The blade G has an extended cutting member S integral with the shank 7 and bent back upon itself to constitute a. V-shape, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 2. The opposite edges 9 and i0 of the V-shaped blade member :ire sharpened to constitnie the cutting edges. At its opposite sides the shank 7 is provided with recesses l1.
The shank 7 of the binde is arranged in the opening 4 in the stock and is secured firmly in position by means oi the setscrew 5 which engages a recess 1i in the blade shank. I provide a wedge l2 having at one end a laterally disposed flange `13 and located in the opening 4 between the side of the opening and the shank 7 'in order to incline the shank suitably with respect to the stock to permit the most efficient operation oi the instrument. It will be understood that the shank of pie blade must be inclined with respect to the stock to a. Certain extent, or in using the instrument the hand of .the operator is liable to come in contact with the bark of "4l/'fie tree. The wedge 12 has a thinner end disposed to ward the side of the stock opposite to the V-shaped binde S, the flange 13 engaging the edge of the opening 4.
In using the instrument, the cutting edge toward the hund of the operator is employed in making gashes or boxings in the bark oi' the tree. In case the edge is destroyed or injured the blade can be reversed and the opposite cutting edge used. To reverse the blade it is merely necessary to loosen the set-screw, thereupon withdrawing the Shank from the opening 4, turn the blade about, reinsert the shank into the opening, and again secure the blade in position by means of the setsi-rew 5, the end of the latter engaging the recess 4 in the -edge of the shank.
and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
1. in n device of the class described, n stock having an nim-ling therethrough, a reversible binde having a shank presenting :i V-shnped cutllmr member. said cutting memaer having cutting edges nl the opposite ends thereof. said shrink lrelng removably arrnnged in said opening of said stock. an adjusting wedge arranged in said openlng to arrange sulrl slfnnk und said stock. and adjusting means for engaging; sold shank at the side remote from said wedge, lo heid said blade in position.
2. In i1 device of the class described, a stock having an opening theretln-ongli, n reversible blade having u shank decrease the weight of the same. By means of the re- V l 'l' i presenting a V-shuped cuttlng member, said cutting memhaving' cutting.' d vs :lt the nppnsilv shank being.runmvahlx' all-ranged in said upvnlm,r 0f sah] stock, an adjusting wedge :nl'anglfil in sah] opening to vagano sah! shank. and u sul-suina' imaging said shank tu huid llnI szlnlu in position In a dvvii'u nl [hc class (Iusi'l-ilicd, :i srm'k having a wwaml an warning thul'vlhrungh, a cutting.: blade havil :l shank, and an vxlomivd pui-tion bont tu fm'm :l V- `ham-d cutting nuanlivi', sah] vnltim.r nwlnlar having cnt- Iinu mi; s al Ih@ nppusihe ends thereof. an adjusting wwlgzv ari'angvd in said oponni;r and having.' a laterally disposi-d Iiangu ungaging the migo nt' Suid opening, said hank having: oppnsitv ivcvssvs and a svt-www engaging mv if said rvuvssvs if said shank [o svcln'c said shank in pusiliun in said npvning.
