wammo 73 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWELL G. WHITEHEAD, 0F WILSON, NORTH CAILDLINA, ASSIGNOR TO P. LORILLARD COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
PAPER BOX.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWELL G. WHITE- HEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilson, in the county of Wilson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that class of boxes which are designed for holding cigarettes, said box comprising a shell or wrapper which receives a sliding tray.
The invention relates more particularly to the tray, and has for its object to provide a tray which is constructed to facilitate the removal of the cigarettes, and which affords complete protection to the latter.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box showing the sliding tray partly open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tray, removed. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the tray. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the tray is constructed.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the shell or wrapper of the box comprises a top 5, a bottom 6, and side walls 7, these parts being arranged in the ordinary manner to form a shell or wrapper which is open at its ends.
The sliding tray comprises a bottom 8 having flaps at each end which are in two sections indicated at 9 and 10, respectively, said sections being formed by bending the flaps on the dotted lines 11. The end flaps are adapted to be bent upwardly from the bottom 8 on the dotted line 12. From one of the longitudinal edges of the bottom extends a flap 13 which is bent up on the dotted line 14, and from the opposite longitudinal edge extends a flap 15 which is bent up from said bottom on the dotted line 16. The flap 15 carries a flap 17, these two flaps being connected by a bend on the dotted line 18. The flap 17 is located intermediate the ends of the flap 15 and is shorter than the latter. At the ends of the flap 17 are flaps 19, said end flaps being joined to the flap 17 by bends on the dotted lines 20. The combined length of the flaps 17 and 19 is equal to the length of the flap 15.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Apr. 9, 1912.
Serial No. 625,666.
Fig. 4 shows the blank out of which the tray is constructed. To assemble the parts, the flaps 9 are bent upwardly to form the ends of the tray, and the flaps 10 are bent inwardly to extend beneath the top of the tray. The flap 13 is bent upwardly to form one of the lon itudinal side walls of the tray, and the ap 15 is bent upwardly to form the other longitudinal side. The flap 17 is bent downwardl to form the top of the tray, its width being such as to extend between the longitudinal side walls of the tray. The end flaps 19 constitute portions of the top of the box, and they extend outwardly as far as the end walls thereof formed by the flaps 9. The flaps 10 extend beneath and are of substantially the same length as the flaps 19. Upon folding the blank as herein described, a tray is had which is rectangular in form. This tray receives the cigarettes and is slidably mounted in the shell or wrapper. The cigarettes are completely inclosed by the tray and are therefore effectually prevented from being damaged. Upon sliding the tray outwardly from one of the ends of the shell or wrapper, the corresponding flaps 9, 10 and 19 may be swung outwardly to expose the ends of the cigarettes, and they can then be readily removed.
I claim:
A blank for a sliding tray for paper boxes comprising a bottom, flaps at the ends of the bottom to form the end walls of the tray, said end flaps having infolded top flaps, flaps at the longitudinal edges of the bottom, said flaps being folded upwardly to form the side walls of the tray, and one of said last-mentioned flaps having an infold ing intermediate flap provided with end flaps, said intermediate flap and the end flaps thereof forming the top of the tray, and the first-mentioned infolding top flaps extending beneath the aforesaid end flaps of the intermediate flap.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOWELL G. WHITEHEAD.
Witnesses Roscoe Gr. BRIGGS, W. V. EMORY.
