I IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII/U/IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIIIIIJ{M Qmllllllllllilllllllllmit UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOACHIM HARANIA, OF FRANKFORT-ON-THE-MAIN, GERMANY.
EXERCISING AND STRENGTH-TESTING APPLIANCE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oaounw HARANIA, a subject of the Ottoman Empire, and residing at Frankfort-on-the-h Iain, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising and Strength- Testing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of my invention is an im proved appliance for exercising the muscles and testing the physical strength, and consisting of a holder carrying a sliding member and a relatively heavy propelling member, which latter, when a thrust is made with the apparatus, drives forward the slide. The appliance can also be used for playing a game of skill, divisions being provided upon it to enable the extent of motion of the slide to be determined.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section through the appliance in its closed position, while Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the same with the slide in its extreme outward position.
Within a holder, consisting of a rod (1, hollowed so as to present a chamber (Z, there is located a slide 7), which, however, can only be moved by the exertion of a certain amount of force. Too easy sliding may be prevented in any appropriate manner, for instance by means of two springs 0, attached to the slide and bearing against the walls of the chamber (Z, whereby more or less jamming is occasioned. The range of movement of the slide in each direction is limited by means of a pin it, passed through the rod a and engaging in a slot g in the slide. The slide 6 in its inmost position does not completely fill the chamber (l, and in the space behind it there is accommodated a Weight 6. The rod is furnished with a handhold f.
In use, the rod is grasped by its handle f Specification of Letters Patent.

and a thrust is made with it. This causes the weight a, lying free in the chamber, at the conclusion of the thrust to strike the slide 7) and eject it to a greater or less extent from the chamber (1, depending upon the force of the thrust and the skill of the user. The distance through which the slide has been propelled can be ascertained by means of divisions 1 marked upon it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new 1. An appliance of the character described, comprising a holder, a sliding member carried thereby, and a relatively heavy freely moving member carried by the holder behind the sliding member and adapted to propel the latter when a thrust is made with the apparatus.
2. An appliance of the character described, comprising a holder, a sliding member carried thereby, means for retarding the motion of the said member, and a relatively heavy freely moving member carried by the holder behind the sliding member and adapted to propel the latter when a thrust .is made with the apparatus.
3. An appliance of the character described, comprising a holder, a sliding member carried thereby, means for retarding the motion of the said member and means for restricting the extent of its motion, and a relatively heavy freely moving member carried by the holder behind the sliding member and adapted to propel the latter when a thrust is made with the apparatus.
4-. An appliance of the character described, comprising a longitudinally chambered holder, a member sliding therein, and a freely moving weight located within the chamber back of the slide.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOACHIM HARANIA.
