Be it known that CHAUNCEY D. CRANDAL, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, and late a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clamps and has for its object to provide a frame on which is mounted an adjustable cam-operating clamping member for supporting a plurality of strips of material to adhere the salne together with glue or the like.
In the drawings-Figure l is a top plan view of the invention, showing the same in application. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail top plan view of the adjustable clamp member and the cam-operating means. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional View ot' the clamp member and the rigid member, showing the supporting frame broken away.
In the construction ot the invention a frame 4t is provided composed of a suitable rod bent to form two parallel members 5. On the free ends of the members 5 is securely bolted a rigid member 6 so arranged as to have its contact surface 7 slightly curved and projecting upwardly a greater distance from the frame and of suflicient size to accommodate the various thicknesses of material to be brought in contact therewith. The said rigid member is suitably held in position by means of the nuts 8 and the locking nuts 9, and in said memberis formed an opening 10 which is designed to permit a member to be placed on the upright so that any number of said clamps may be located one above the other. On the frame 4 and slidably mounted upon the members 5 is located the adjustable or sliding member 11. This member consists of the yoke 12, its ends provided with perforated lugs 13 which have bearing upon the parallel members 5, the opposite end 14 of said yoke being likewise provided with perforated lugs 15 which have bearing upon the parallel members 5, and by means ot' said lugs the yoke is held in position upon the frame and permitted to be adjusted on it at will. In the center portion of the yoke is provided a bore 16 in which is mounted and supported a cam 17 the portion of said cam which is inserted in the bore 16 being of smaller diameter and is held in position Specification of Letters Patent.

by means ot' the screw 18 and the plate 19, yet so arranged as to permit said cam to be revolved in the yoke by means of inserting an instrument into the rectangular opening Q() formed in said cam. The upper portion of the cam is arrzmged to be brought in contact with a contact plate 21. This plate is of suitable rigid material and is provided with openings corresponding with the openings in the lugs l?) and 15 and rests upon the parallel members 5 in advance of the member 14. Said plate is bent rearwardly and its ends bent inwardly tothe rear of the member 14 and also provided with openings through which the parallel members 5 are passed.
Between the lugs 153 and 15 of the yoke and upon the parallel members 5 are located locking` plates 92; each ot' said plates being provided with openings 2? oi a size somewhat larger than the parallel men'lbers 5, and the inner ends otl said locking plates having recesses Qi so as to permit the upper and lower edge oi said plate to slightly project over the upper member ot the yoke (see Fig. 2).
Upon the parallel members 5 oi the frame and between the lugs 13 and the locking plates are expansive springs 25 which are designed to normally hold the locking plates in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2, and while in this position the sliding member is rigidly locked upon the frame. The upper ends 26 of the locking plates project within a short distance of the inner ends of the plate 21 so that by contacting with the plate 21, when the cam 17 is in position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the plate will Contact with the locking plates compressing the springs and causing the locking plates to assume the position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when in this position will permit the sliding member to be freely adjusted-on the frame.
lhen placing material between the slidingand rigid members of the clamp, as shown in Fig. 1, and after glue has been placed between the contacting surfaces of the material, the operator then advances the sliding member so that the plate 9.1 contacts with the material while during this manipula.- tion the contacting surface 27 of the cam is in a position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The operator then places an instrument or wrench in the opening 20 of the cam and by turning the same so that the contacting surface 27 of said cam contacts with the plate 21, the material is forced together. During this operation the two rear inturned ends of the plate are advanced away from the locking plates permitting said locking plates to thoroughly bind and retain the sliding members in rigid position and in this manner the material is thoroughly clamped and the contacting edges brought closely together, the operative position being clearly shown in Fig. l. Vhen it is desired to remove the material from its clamped position, the instrument or wrench is again inserted in the opening 2O and the clamp released from the plate 21 and placed in a position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, then the plate can be forced rearwardly until its inturned ends contact with the locking plates releasing their frictional contact on the parallel members 5.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to have secured by the grant of Letters Patent, is:
1. A clamp comprising a U-shaped frame formed of a single circular rod, a member rigidly secured to the open end thereof, a sliding member mounted between the side members of the frame and having bearing thereon at its front and rear `ends only, a cam mounted on the sliding member, a contact plate slidably mounted in advance of the sliding member, a dog mounted on each side of the sliding member, and having an opening of a slightly greater diameter than the circular rod the edges of said opening adapted to bite the rod and firmly hold the sliding plate at any point on the frame, the 'springs for holding the dogs in frictional contact with the frame, and means whereby both dogs may be released simultaneously.
2. A clamp comprising a U-shaped frame formed of a single circular bar, a member rigidlyT secured at the open end thereof, a sliding member mounted between the parallel members of the frame, having bearing thereon at its front and rear ends, a contact plate slidably mounted in advance of the sliding member and having bearing on the side members of the frame both in front and at the rear of the front bearing of the sliding member, a pair of dogs mounted on the sliding member and having an opening slightly larger than the diameter of the circular bar through which the bar is passed, springs mounted on the bar between the dogs and the rear bearing of the sliding member for vholding the dogs in frictional contact with the bar, the edges of the open* ing adapted to bite on opposite sides of the bar thereby firmly locking the 4sliding plate at any desired point on the frame and means whereby said dogs may be simultaneously released from contact with the bar, subsiantially as specified.
