Description

tnitedtate @wat @time N 1 .IOSIAII ROSEORANS, OF BERKSI-IIRE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR rlO ADELIA R.
SWAR'IZ, OF CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA..
Letters Patent No. 101,920, (lated April l2, 1870.
IMPROVED LISTING-JACK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that l, J osmn ROSECRANS, of Berkshire, Deleware county, of the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Lifting-Jacks; and I do declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference vbeing had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specilication, correspondil'lg part-s being indicated by the same letters.
lhe thawing represents a longitudinal elevation of the machine. It may be cast ot' malleable il'on.
A-X is the lever employed in lifting, the powerbe ing applied at A; the weight is at X.
u is the fulcrum;
C is the stem; and
D E is the base or foot upon which it rests. ,y
The stern G coiisists of two upright bars, connected by rivets or pins, as a g h i f.
Between these bars on a and f, revolves the lever A X, and the base D E. When the short arm of the leverX is put under any weight, to the liftingof which the lifting-jack is adapted, as, the axle of a vehicle, and the long arm A depressed, the weight, in being suiiciently elevated, is transferred to the top of the stem C at B, where it rests, even when the power at A is withdrawn. v
'lhc arms of the base D E are of unequal length, so asto give the stem -O different degrees ot' elevation, adapting it to dicrent heights of the weight to be lifted. When the arms of the base are horizontal or at right angles with the stem C, then the stem has the lowest of three different elevations. When the short arm E is m'ade the base, as represented by the dotted lines E D, then a higher elevation is attained.
.'When the longer arm 'D is made the base, then the one skilled in the art can make and use' it, I make the following C' laim I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Pateutr The adjustable base, for lengthening the jack. C, which is provided with the lever A by means of the unequal arms of the base D and E, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOSIAH ROSEORANS.
