CLAMP FOR BURIAL-CASES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 17, 1909. Serial No. 496,425.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PATRICK D. SKAHEN, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Clamp for Burial-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to burial cases and particularly to means for clamping the cover of the case to the box thereof, and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are sectional views through the cover and a side wall of a sheet metal burial case provided with my clamping means, one of the clamps being shown in its operative position in Fig. 1, and in its inoperative position in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a plan of the blank from which one of the clamping members is formed.
1 is a side of the box of a burial case, and 2 the cover resting on the upper edge of the box, the elements 1 and 2 being secured together by clamps, one of which is illustrated, the clamps being carried by one of said elements and coacting with the other. Preferably, the clamps are carried by the box 1 and each comprises a base 3 secured to the box 1, a clamping member 4 carried by, and adjustably connected to, the base S and having a portion extending opposite to or overhanging the margin 5 of the cover 2, and an additional clamping member carried by the overhanging portion of the first-mentioned clamping member for coacting with the upper face of the margin 5 of the cover 2. As here illustrated, the box is formed of sheet metal and the upper margin thereof is bent outwardly, forming an outwardly extending flange 6 at its upper edge upon which rests the margin 5 of the cover 2, a piece of packing 7 being usually interposed between the flange 6 and margin 5 of the cover. The base 3 of the clamp is secured to one side of the box beneath the flange 6 and is provided with an outwardlyextending arm 8 projecting beyond the flange 6 and the edge of the cover, and the clamping member 4 carried by the base is connected to the base 3 by an upright threaded connection, said member having a portion 9 overhanging the margin 5 of the cover. Preferably, the .arm 8 of the base 8 is'formed with a threaded eye for receiving a threaded spindle 10 provided on said clamping member 4. The additional clamping member is carried by the overhanging portion 9 of the member 4 and is movable into and out of engagement with the underlying margin 5 of the cover 2. This additional clamping member comprises a cam 11 pivoted to the portion 7 of the member 4 and having a curved surface arranged eccentric to the pivot thereof for coacting with the upper face of the margin 5 of the cover 2. Preferably, the cam is bifurcated and arranged astride the overhanging portion 9 of the member 4, and is connected to said portion 9 by a pivot 12 extending transversely through the bifurcations 13 and said portion 9. Each bifurcation 13 is formed with a curved surface 14 arranged eccentric to the pivot 12. The cam 11 is also provided with shoulders or stops 15 for limiting the pivotal movement of the cam into operative position.
' The cam 11 is usually formed from an elongated blank shown in Fig. 3, formed with lobes 16 at one end, and with outwardly extending arms 17 intermediate of its ends. The blank is folded along longitudinal lines 18 until the lobes 16 at one end thereof and the arms 17 are parallel to the portion 19 between the lines 18 and the other end of the blank is folded upwardly along the line 20 forming a hand-engaging portion 21. When the blank is thus folded the lobes 16 and arms 17 constitute the bifurcations 13 of the cam and the space between the lobes 15 forms the passage for the overhanging port1on of the clamping member 4.
In operation, when the cover 2 has been placed in position, the clamping member 4 can be turned about the axis of the spindle and until the cam 11 is close to the upper margin of the cover and the cam is then moved about its pivot 12 downwardly, in order to engage the upper face of the cover and press the cover toward the flange 6 of the side 1.
What I claim, is
1. In a burial case, the combination with a box and a cover resting on the upper edge of the box; of a clamping member connected to the box by an upright threaded connection and having a portion movable into and out of a position overhanging the margin of the cover when said clamping member is turned about the axis of its threaded Patented Mar. 5, 1912. p
connection, such overhanging portion being movable toward and from said margin during the turning movement of the clamping member, and a second clamping member carried by the overhanging portion of the firstmentioned clamping member, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a burial case, the combination with a box and a cover resting on the upper edge of the box; of a clamping member connected to the box by an upright threaded connection and having aportion movable into and out of a position overhanging the margin of the cover when said clamping member is turned about the axis of its threaded connection, such overhanging portion being movable toward and from said margin during the turning movement of the clamping member, and a second clamplng member carried by 'the overhanging portion of the first-' 'mentioned member and consisting of a cam lever pivoted to said overhanging portion, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
