Be it known that l, GUSTAF O. OLIN, vresiding at Chicago,4 in the county of Cook andr Slate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Work Holders, of which the following is a specification. I'
My invention relates to work-holders for use in sewing; and its object is to providea simple, inexpensive, and efficient device for such purpose embodying novel and advantageous features, which' will be apparent from the descri ption hereinafter made.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the workholder clamped in position; Fig. 2, a front elevation with some of the parts broken away to show the interior mechanism; Fig. 3, a sectional view on the line 3 of Fig. 2; Fig.l 4, an inverted plan view of the upper jaw, and Fig. 5 a plan view of the lower jaw.
The holder proper comprises a pair of jaws pivoted upon each other, the lower or stationary jaw of 'which comprises a frame or plate l, having at its forward end an upturned portionr2, forming the jaw proper and preferably provided with serrations or teeth. The opposite side portions of the plate are upturned to form lugs or ears 3, and thereby provide bearings for parts hereinafter mentioned. The movable jaw consists of a frame or plate 4, having a downwardly-extending portion 5 or jaw proper, which preferably slips by the other jaw, as seen in the drawings, so as to securely hold the work without danger of tearing or injuring the same. The` plate 4 has depending lugs 6, provided with holes, which receive a pivot-pin 7, passing transversely through the lugs 3, whereby the upper jawis pivoted upon the stationary one. These jaws are normally held closed by means of one or more spripgs 8,`which may be conveniently arranged onv the pivot pin, as shown.
The jaws are opened and retained open by means of a rock-shaft or operatingrod 9,bear ing in the side ianges 3. This rod is provided with means whereby the jaws maybe opened and the upper jaw retained in a raised positionY by providing a positive bearing or support therefor when the rock-shaft is turned toacertain position. providing the rock-shaft with a projection or eccentric, which may be conveniently' formed out of the shaft itself. As shown, the shaft is first bent to form two arms 10 and bent 55 again to form a flat frame portion l1 between said arms, such flat portion to provide a posi tive bearing for the -npper or movable jaw. Upon the bottom of the plate 4 I prefer toV provide a stop pin or projection 12 to limit 6o the movement of the rod.
The clampingdevice is preferably' formed of a single piece of wire in the form of abent loop and comprising an upper horizontal porl tion 14, a vertical portion 15, and a lower horizontal portion 16. The free ends are at the upper portion and are attached to the stationary jaw by clips 16a, `formed from the plate 1 and turned over the-wire to secure it. The wire at the end of the lower portion en- 7o circles a screw-nut 17 to receive/a clampingscrew 18, so thatthe device may be clamped to a table 19 or other suitable support or the like.
I prefer to provide the plate a with a pad 7 5 or cushion 20, which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. The purpose of this cushionis to receive pins, needles, &c.
The normal position of the jaws is closed, and when it is desired to open them the han- 8o .dle 2l of the rock-shaft is turned, whereupon the bent portion of this shaft acts as a c`am or eccentric, pressing underneath the plate 4 forward of its pivot,ther'eby opening the jaws. When the handle is turned sufficiently, the portion 11 of the shaft lies at against the bottom of the plate, aording a positive bearing or support for the upper jaw and retain- Such construction provides a combined means for opening the jaws 9o and holding them in such condition. The office of the stop is to limitv the movement of the rod and prevent its turning more than is necessary. After the jaws are thus opened the work may be inserted and the handle thereupon turned,so as to remove said positive bearing for the upper jaw and allow the springs to act so as to close the jaws.
` Although I havedescribed more or less' precise forms and details of construction, I Ioo do not intend to be understood aslimiting myself thereto, as I contemplate changes in form, the proportion of parts, and the substitution of equivalents as circumstances may suggest or render expedient and without dej parting from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- I l. A Work-holder comprising a pair of spring-pressed normally-closed jaws, means for clamping said jaws on a table or the like and a rock-shaft mounted in one of the jaws and having a bent portion arranged between the jaws and having a handle portion outside thereof whereby the jaws may loe opened to admit the work.
2. Awork-holder comprisingspring-pressed plates having jaws at one end and pivoted upon each other, and a rock-shaft working between the plates and having a bent portion adapted to press against one of the plates to open the jaws when the rod is turned.
3. A work -holder comprising a pair of spring-pressed plates having jaws at one end and pivoted upon each other, means for clamping said jaws on a table or the like, a cam device working between the plates to open the jaws and a stop located upon one of the plates and adapted to be contacted by the cam toV limit the movement of the'cam.
4. A work-holdercomprisin g pivotecl plates 1 and 4 having jaws 2 and 5 respectively, the plate 1 having opposite lianges 3, a rock-shaft 9 bearing in said flanges and having an eccentric portion adapted to bear against the plate 4, springs for normally hold ing the jaws closed and a clamping device comprising a continuons wire in the form of a bent loop having the vertical portion 15 and right-angled portions 14 and 16, the plate 1 having clips 16 bent over to engage the wire-forming portion 14, a screw-nut 17 encircled by the wire in portion 16 and a set-screw received by said nut.
