Description

W. MAKI April 25, 1939.
VISE
Filed Sept. 23, 1937 Patented Apr. 25, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relate-s to a vise. It is aimed to provide a novel construction of vise capable of quick opening and provided with a novel yoke and pawl to assist in the adjustment, and also preferably provided with a cutting attachment and a punch press.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the vise;
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the vise taken substantially on the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on the plane of line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane of line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, in designates a vertical relatively stationary jaw which is extended as at H, to form a means whereby it may be attached to a bench or other support. An arm l2 extends forwardly from the jaw member Ill and a jaw member I3, complemental to that at In is pivotally connected at M to said arm I2. A leaf spring l5, fastened as at IE to the jaw Ill bears against the jaw 13 and tends to open'it at the gripping portion 11, away from the gripping portion l8 of the jaw 10.
A U-shaped metallic yoke or strap [9 surrounds the jaws I6 and I3 providing a bar on 35 each side thereof and such jaws are cutaway or grooved as at 2B and 2|, in their sides, to mount such yoke. The terminals of the yoke are joined by a rod or bolt 2| on which the eccentric 22 of a lever 23 is pivoted, the eccentric engaging in a socket or cutaway portion 24 of the jaw !3. A leaf spring 25 is pivoted at 26 to the jaw i3 and it bears against a pin or abutment 21 on the yoke, and is tensioned so as to maintain the periphery of the eccentric- 22 in. engagement with the wall of the socket 24.
Said yoke [9 in its under edge is provided with teeth or serrations as at 28 and the same are engageable by a pawl 29. The pawl 29 rests in a notch 30 of the jaw Ill and it is urged toward 50 the vertical by means of weights 3| carried by fingers 32 extending from the pawl 29 and disposed one on each side of the jaw Ill. The pawl thus removably rests in the recess 30. The pawl also has projections 33 extending therefrom and between the side members of the yoke 19 as a further guard against displacement accidentally of the pawl.
It will thus be realized that the yoke and pawl may be manually operated so as to engage the pawl 29 in any of the teeth or serrations 28 according to the work or adjustment desired and that for the final or positive clamping action, the lever 23 may be operated so that the eccentric will bear against the recess 24 and cause the jaw l3 to close against the jaw II! at the gripping portions l1 and [8.
The jaws may also be used to operate cutters and in this connection, co-aoting cutting elements 34 extend one from each of the jaws l3 and Ill.
The said jaws may also be used to operate as a punch press and in this connection the complemental elements 35 and 36 of a conventional punch press are connected to the jaws l3 and I0, respectively.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. Apparatus of the class described comprising a pair of jaws, means mounting one of the jaws for pivotal movement relatively to the other, a yoke surrounding the jaws, teeth on the yoke, a pawl mounted by one of the jaws engageable with the teeth, means mounted by the yoke engageable with the other jaw to tighten the jaws, the jaw carrying the pawl having a recess in which the pawl is loosely disposed, means preventing lateral displacement of the pawl, comprising fingers disposed on opposite sides of the jaw having the recess, said fingers being weighted to urge the pawl into engagement with the teeth, and projections on the pawl disposed between the side members of the yoke.
2. Apparatus of the class described comprising a pair of jaws, means mounting one of the jaws for pivotal movement relatively to the other, a yoke surrounding the jaws, teeth on the yoke, a pawl mounted by one of the jaws engageable with the teeth, means mounted by the yoke engageab-le with the other jaw to tighten the jaws, the jaw carrying the pawl having a recess in which the pawl is loosely disposed, means preventing lateral displacement of the pawl, comprising fingers disposed on opposite sides of the jaw having the recess, said fingers being weighted to urge the pawl into engagement with the teeth, cam means carried by the yoke and operable to close the jaws,'and a spring means urging the cam into engagement with the jaw adjacent thereto and having abutment with the yoke.
