To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. GooDwIN,
a citizenof the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented anew and useful Vise, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates 'torimprovements in vises and more particularly .to vises' for filing or fine finishing work and consists in a vise adapted to be placed between the jaws ofan ordinary vise such as is used by blacksmiths, machinists, coppersmithsrorin fact almost any mechanic.
The object of this invention is to provide a vise of the character referred'to which may be placed in a larger vise and is always open and ready for use. x
Another object is to provide such a vise which will hold the work in a position so that it may be easily worked upon by a mechanic without necessitating his having to assume an unnatural position in order, to
perform his work..
A further object is to provide an article I of the character referred to which will'be durable and inexpensive to manufacture and easy to operate.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figurel is a side elevation of a common form of bench vise showing my improved vise placed therein. Fig. 2 is a similar view on a smaller scale showing my vise placed in position in a blacksmiths vise. F ig. 3 is a longitudinal section through my vise on an enlarged scale.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings. The numerals 1 and 2 indicate the stationary and movable jaws respectively 'of a common form of bench vise in which is shown my improved finishing vise.

with a downwardly disposed arm 4 at the lower extremity of which is formed a reduced head 5 provided with an inclined slot 6. A lug? is formed upon the arm 4 at a point adjacent to the jaw 3, said lug being adapted at all times'to rest upon one of the jaws of a common form of vise thus supporting my visexbetween the jaws of the larger vise as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The arm 4 is provided upon its inner face with a recess 8, in which is piv-. oted by means of the pin 9a connecting link 10 connected to the upper jawas will be hereinafter described. within the bifurcated portion 16, said pin being located within the slot 6 to limit the movement of the jaws. A lug 18, similar to thelug 7, is provided upon the arm 15. A recess 19 is formed in the arm 15 to accommodate the lower extremity of the link 10, said link being pivoted within said recess by means of a pin 20. j
The operation of this device is as follows: The vise is first set into a larger vise of some common form such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the lug 7 supporting the vise within the jaws of the larger vise. When work is placed between the jaws 3 and 14 and the larger vise is tightened, the jaw 14 will move downward toward the 'aw 3, said jaw 14 being guided by means 0 the pin 17 traveling in the slot 6,- the link 10 binding the two jaws together. As the jaw 14 is brought down toward the jaw 3 the lug 18 upon the arm 15 will come to rest upon the top of one of the jaws of the larger vise thus supporting the entire finishing vise within the jaws of the large vise by means of the lugs 7 and 18. When the movable jaw uponthe large vise is released'the spring 11 will cause the jaws of v the finishing vise to open thus leaving the vise always open and ready'for new work to be inserted between the jaws thereof.
Thisvise is especially designed for blacksmiths'or machinists and has an advantage over the common typeof vise in that the work clampedwithin thisvise is brought down fiat before themechanic who is Working thereon so that he is better able to work and better able to see just what'he is doing with the work held in this position.
