To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaynesboro, in thecounty of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin sash holders, and the object of the invention is to provide a cheap and simple device by the use of which the window sash may be held at any desired point in the window frame and rattling of the sashes will be prevented.
The object of the invention is obtained in such a device as is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will behereinafter first fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a window showing the meeting rails of the sashes with my improved sash holder mounted thereon, the, de-
vice being arranged to hold the sashes in their relative adjusted positions. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device arranged to permit free movement of the sashes. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the sash holder.
,The sashes l and 2 may be of any desired construction and are mounted to slide in the frame 3 in the usual manner, being fitted to runways or grooves 4, separated by a parting bead 5 all of which are of the ordinary form and constitute no part of my present invention.
Upon the upper side of the meeting rail of the lower inner sash I secure a bracket 6 having an upstanding projection 7, the outer or rear face 8 of which is inclined downwardly and outwardly, as clearly shown, whereby the said face gradually approaches the outer or 'upper sash 2, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. On the front side of the projection 7 near the base of the same, I form a shoulder 9 in which is a transverse groove adapted to receive the journal portion 10 of a lever 11. This lever 11 is shown in the form of a stout wire or metal rod having its rear end turned which is journaled the locking roller 13,
the journal 10 being also disposed at a right angle to the lever so that the lever will swing substantially parallel with the side of the projection 7 to maintain the locking roller 13 in position to engage the inclined face 8 when the device is in its operative 1 position. The roller is journaled loosely on the hook 12 so as to have some lost motion thereon in order that when the sashes are adjusted to the desired point the roller may bind upon the projection without tending to bend or otherwise injure the lever or the hooked end of the same. The journal 10 of the lever may be held in the groove of the shoulder 9 in any desired manner, and
I have shown a keeper 1 1 secured upon the front end of the base portion of the bracket 6 and extending up over the journal of the keeper so as to prevent the same rising from the groove as will be readily understood.
The wire or rod constituting the lever is extended forward from the journal to con-' stitute a handle, as shown at 15, and its extremity is then bent inwardly so as to extend across the plane of the bracket, as
shown at 16, and rest upon the upper face of the same when the device is thrown to an inoperative position so as to support the roller as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The base portion of the bracket is provided with lateral perforated lugs or ears 17 through which fastening-screws may be inserted into the meeting rail of the sash to secure the device in position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the operation and ad- 1 roller be moveddownward it will bind between the said side bar and the inclined face of the bracket and, consequently will hold the sashes firmly against the sides of their runways, and thereby prevent rattling. Assuming the sashes to be in their normal closed positions if the upper sash be lowered or the lower sash be raised, the frictional engagement of the roller upon the upper sash I Copies of this patent may be obtained for will cause the lever to swing toward the narrower end of the spacebetween the bracket and the upper sash so that the roller will be caused to bind therein as will be readily understood. Should it be desired to adjust either sash to a different position, the handle portion 15, 16 of the lever is pressed down-' ward and forward so as to swing the roller over to the position shown in Fig. 2,' after which the sashes may be easily raised and lowered. After the. sashes have been ad'- rjusted to the ,desired point, the roller isswung back to the position shown in Fig. 1 and accidental movement of the sashes will then be prevented. It will be noted that when the roller is in its forward position the front end of the roller carrying lever serves as astop or support, to maintain the lever in that position so, that the hands of the opwhich it plays and consequently the roller will then not bind upon the sashes to prevent their movement.
It will be seen that my device is exceedingly simple in its construction is'composed of very few parts and will be found very efficient for the purpose for which it is designed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- .entis I A sash holder comprising a bracket having a transverse shoulder on its front side above its base, said shoulder having 'a' groove in its upper face, a lever comprising an 1ntermediate transverse portion j 'ournaled in said groove and arms extending from the opposite ends of-said journal portion at an angle, to, eachfjother, the free ends of said arms being bent-"laterally inwardand 'one off's'aid laterally bent'ends forming a handle and rest, a roller mounted '-loosely onthe other inwardly bent endof the lever, and a detachably secured keeper extending over the groove in the transverse -fshoulder-of the bracket and over the intermediate portion of the, lever-journaled in said groove.
