UNITED srn'rns Parana enrich THOMAS HENRY WILSON, OF BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF TO JAMES RICHARD SANKEY, OF BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA.
SASH-HOLDER To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY WIL- SON, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, resident of Norman Park, Brisbane, in the State of Queensland, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Sash-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved sash adjuster more particularly adapted for use on railway carriage windows but applicable also for other windows.
The object is to provide means for supporting the sash at any height, raising or owering the sash with one hand, and for instantaneous action of the operating catch; and the invention consists of a spring catch fixed to one side of the sash engaging with a rack fixed to the window frame. A rod is pivotally connected to the catch and to the sash lifter which consists of a bell crank fixed to a plate which is secured to the center of the sash either at the top or bottom. By a slight modification the catch can be operated by a short lever instead of by the bell crank and connecting rod.
To fully describe the invention I will now refer to the drawings in which Figure 1 is a face view of the catch and lifter, Fig. 2 is a reverse side of the catch, Fig. 3 is a modification of the catch, Fig. A is a reverse side of the lifter, Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the rack, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the rack.
A is a metal plate recessed on the inner side which is screwed on to the side of the sash, and within the recess is a catch or pawl B working upon a pin D is a spring :eeping the pawl in engagement with the rack on the window frame and G a guard rod for holding the pawl in position.
E is a connecting rod pivotally connected to a pin F on pawl B and to a pin I on bell crank J of the sash lifter of which Q is a covering plate having a slot Q on the face through which passes a pin N fixed to the bell crank, and to the in is fastened a knob P for operating the be crank which is pivf) oted upon a pin K.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 15, 1908.
. from plate.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Serial No. 427,188.
L and L are studs or pins for inserting in the sash rail and M a rib upon which one side of the bell crank rests to keep same free Formed integrally with the plate Q is a finger lift B.
In the modified form of catch E is a short lever pivoted on the same pin as the pawl and engaging with a pin on the opposite side of the pawl to that in Fig. 2 which when depressed releases the pawl from engagement with the rack.
H is a rack, the teeth of which are beveled two ways, from the edge of the tooth inward and from one side of the tooth to the other as shonn in Figs. 5 and 6, this throws the sash against the frame and tends to pre vent the same from rattling.-
The point of the pawl is shaped similar to a parrots bill, and in operation, the pawl moving in the arc of a circle practically hooks into the teeth of the rack which are made to coincide with the point of the pawl.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sash adjuster comprising a catch having a hook shaped pointed end, the bottom face of the hook inclin ng from one side to the other laterally, means for operating the catch, and a rack having its teeth beveled from the front edge inward and from one side of the tooth to the other.
2. A sash adjuster comprising a recessed plate A carried on the sash, a spring controlled catch B in said plate, said catch having a hook shaped pointed end with the bottom face of the hook inclining laterally from one side to the other, a rack on the window frame having its teeth beveled inwardly and downwardly, and also from one side to the other, and means for operating the catch.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS HENRY WILSON.
