Description

W. H. FOX. BASE BALL GLOVE 0R Mm. APPLICATION FILED JULY 26, 1911.
1,017,964, Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
INVENTOA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. FOX, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
BASE-BALL GLOVE OR MITT.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Fox, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Ball Gloves or Mitts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in base ball gloves or mitts.
In the use of base ball gloves 0r mitts the padding in that portion of the same over the palm of the hand where the base ball strikes or pounds, soon becomes packed and reduced in thickness, thus reducing the efficiency 0f the glove to protect the hand of the user. Heretofore, when the padding has become compressed, it has been necessary to open the glove and rearrange the padding. This is not only troublesome, but is apt to result in altering the proper shape of the glove and its padding.
The object of my present invention is to so construct a base ball glove or mitt, as to admit of the ready introduction of supplemental padding to augment the compressed padding of the glove in that portion where the excessive pounding of the ball comes.
A further object .is to construct a base ball glove or mitt as to permit the insertion, removal or rearrangement of supplemental padding over that portion of the device occupied by the palm of the hand of the wearer.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
My improvements are applicable to the various forms of base ball gloves and mitts.
Thedrawing is a rear view of a catchers glove showing an embodiment of my invention.
1 represents a catchers glove of conventional shape and provided with padding as commonly employed in such gloves. The glove is made with finger pockets 2 and a thumb pocket 3. Secured over the palm portion of the glove and against the rear face of the padding, is a supplemental Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 26, 1911.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912. Serial No. 640,637.
pocket 4. This pocket extends to the rear end of the glove where it is made with a mouth 5,the forward end of the pocket being preferably permanently closed. The rear end of the pocket will be normally closed by any suitable readily detachable fastening means. In the drawing, I have shown glove-button fasteners 6.
WVhen the original padding of the glove, at the palm portion thereof becomes compressed and hardened, the player can insert a supplemental pad 7 into the pocket 4. This pad may be made to approximately fill the pocket as indicated by the dotted lines 7, but as it is essential that the pad shall cover the palm portion only of the glove, it is apparent that by turning the supplemental pad end-for-end, when a portion thereof has become compressed,a fresh portion of the pad 7 will become disposed in position to supplement the compressed original padding of the glove.
It is apparent that when the supplemental pad has been compressed or worn thin, it can be readily replaced with a new pad of any suitable material and at a small cost.
WVith my improvements the longevity of a base ball glove or mitt can 'be increased, and the hand of the user will be effectually protected as long as the glove is int-act.
I-Iaving fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A base ball glove or mitt having a permanent pad therein and provided with a pocket over its padded palm portion only, in combination with a removable padding shaped to fit and fill said pocket.
2. A base ball glove or mitt provided with a permanent padding and provided with a pocket over its palm portion only, said pocket having a mouth at its rear end and detachable fastening means for closing said mouth, in combination .with a removable padding shaped to fit and fill said pocket.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM H. FOX.
