BASE-BALL GLOVE AND MITT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Vatontotlfflopt. 2, ttlli.
Application tiled August 8, 1912. Serial No. 714,066.
To (LN fui/tom, t 'm/rg/ concern Be it known that I, CHARLES M. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in ,Baseall Gloves and Mitts, of which the Yfollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to base ball gloves or mitts, and pertains more particularly to the class of such articles in which the front and back portions thereof are separably united and between which padding material is carried and scparably secured to said liront and back portions to permit of the adjustment ot the thickness and location of the padding.
The object of my invention is to produce a base ball. glove or mitt of said class which is provided with a ring or heel oi padding material carried upon the main body portion of the padding material to which access may be readily had for adjustment to conform to the individual preferences of the users.
A further object thereof is to produce a separable ring or heel for the padding oi gloves or mitts of said character comprising a casing carried upon the face and adjacent to the outer edge of the main body portion oit the padding material and provided with eyelets adjacent to its outer edge adapted to be laced together 'for convenient opening to provide access to permit of the adjustmentof the padding material contained therein, and a still further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap and efficient article oi said class than has heretofore been provided.
To these ends my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective View of the padding of a base ball mitt of my invention with the outer covers removed; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same with the front and back portions thereon, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view oit' my invention applied to the padding structure ot a finger glove.
Referring to the drawing, l indicates the palm or tace portion of the base ball glove or mitt of my invention, and 2 the back portions which are separably united to each other, either' entirely or partially around their outer edges by the eyelets 3 and lacing 4t and with which these parts are separably united to the blank 5 on which the main body portion (3 oil the padding material is secured through the eyelct 7 adjacent to the outer edge oi the blank.
In the structure thus described it will be appreciated that access may be readily had to the main body portion of the padding material and that same may be modified and adjusted and secured in position upon the blank 5, but in gloves or mitts as heretofore constructed no provision has been made tor the adjustment ot' the padding material contained in the ring or heel 8 carried upon the face of the main body portion 6 to enable the user to renew or adjust the same according to his preference and the condition ot wear. For this purpose I construct the casing 9 open around its outer edge and provide a row of eyelets adjacent to the outer edge of the upper and lower walls which may be secured together and closed by the cord end laced through the said eyelets. y such a construction it will be apparent that the location and amount ot contents oi the padding material 11 carried in said casing may be readily modified and regulated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is
l. A pad for base ball mitts or gloves, comprising a main body portion and a splitring of padding material carried upon the tace ot' said main body portion adjacent to the outer edge thereoit, said split-ring comprising a case of flexible labric having an opening therein and adapted to be stutl'ed with padding material, and means lor closing said opening.
2. In a pad Jfor base ball mitts or gloves, the combination with a blank ol flexible material adapted to be removably secured to portion of padding material Conforming to the outei` edges of the @over of the glove, of the outer edge thereof, substantially as dei0` a main body portion of paddin` material sescribed. cured on said blank, a oase of flexible material having an opening therein adapted t0 be stuied with padding material, means for closing said opening in the case, said case being carried on the face of said main body CHARLES M. KING.
Witnesses MAE NEFF, ANGUS MACDONALD.
