UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
JOHN GAMBLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE A. REACH, OF
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BASE-p-BALL MITT.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1908.
Application led December 27, 1907. Serial No. 408,303.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GAMBLE, a cti.
delphia, inl the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Base-Ball Mitts, of which the ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in base ball mitts or gloves, and ertains particularly to that class of mitts isclosed in United States Letters Patent Number 836,378, granted to myself on November 20, 1906.
The object of my invention is to produce an article of said class rovided with an outer rim of stiffening pad ing and having a central depression or pocket of a soft and yielding nature adapted to receive the impact of the ball, which will be sustained by the stiening of the outer rim.
In the construction shown in my patent, above mentioned, the outer rim comprises a ring of loose padding material and a cover confining and embracing the said outer rim and the exterior edge of the felt body portion of the padding, said cover being stitched to the ring and the felt portionl body.
In use, it has been found that the construction of the outer rim or ring of loose padding rigidly secured upon the body portion of the padding bya cover embracing and stitched to oth the ring and the outer edge of the body portion, is subject to objections, and the pur'- pose of this invention is to obviate such objrctions and improve the construction of the ove. g To these ends, my invention includes the combinations and arrangements of component parts to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view thereof Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the outer ring.
The padding shown in the drawing is adapted for use in the well known type of base ball gloves or mitts in which the palm portions and the back portions of the cover are sepa rably connected to permit the insertion and removal of the padding. In gloves of this char'- acter, the padding frequently becomes damaged or worn in places, and it often becomes necessary to adjust the thickness and quality thereof to the individual requirements of the users. To permit the replacing of damaged parts `and the ready interchange and adjustment of the adding, while still maintaining the shape anstiffening effect of the outerring, I form the padding of the main body portion 1, which may be of any desired thickness or material, and conforming to the sha e of the outer cover of the glove. Upon t e palm face of said body ortion 1 I rovide a separate ring of padding 2, Whicii conforms to the contour of the outer edge of the cover. Said ring is composed of wool or cotton, or other suitable material, tightly incased'in a covering 3 of canvas, muslin or like fabric.
The ring 2 may be loosely carried within the outer covers of the glove, or it may be whipstitched to the outer edge of the body portion 1 of the paddin in such manner that the threads may be casi y severed to disconnect said portions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pad for base-ball mitts comprising a body portion, and a ring of padding material tightly incased in a separate cover and separably carried on the facev of the body portion, substantially as described.
2. A pad for base-ball mitts, comprising a body portion, and a ring of padding material tightly incased in a separate cover, and oonforming to the contour of the outer edge of the body portion, and detachably secured to said body portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN GAMELE.
