CHARLES lVI. KING, 0F WASHINGTON, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO A. Gr. SPALDING- 'BROS., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., INCORPORATED T N NEW JERSEY.
BASE-BALL IVIITT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at VaShingtOn, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Base-Ball Mitts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to base ball mitts and pertains more particularly to pads for same.
The object of my invention is to produce a base ball mitt in which the pad may be secured in its extended position and shape conforming to the outer contour of the cover thereof, and obviate the tendency of the padding to buckle and wad out of position and shape from the effects of use.
A further object of my invention is to produce a pad for such mitts comprising a blank of flexible fabric conforming` to the outer contour of the mitt in which it is carried, adapted to be removably secured at intervals upon its outer edge to the outer edge of the cover, upon the face of which may be built and secured the padding materials, and for other purposes to be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
To these ends, my invention includes the combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed Out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my pad removed from the cover of the mitt; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of a base ball mitt containing my pad, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
My invention includes, generally, a base ball mitt comprising a palm portion and a back portion of the cover adapted to be separately connected at their outer edges by lacings, a flexible blank of suitable fabric carried therein conforming to the outer contour of the cover adapted to be laced or otherwise removably secured upon or adjacent to the outer edges thereof, and suitable padding material built upon said blank and stitched or otherwise suitably secured thereon, whereby the same is constantly held in the desired position between the cover.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the front or palm portion of the cover of a base ball mitt and 2 designates the back i Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Application led July 21, 1909, Serial No. 508,788.

portion thereof. Adjacent to the outer edges of the cover, the said front and back portions are provided with eyelets 3 by which the same may be laced together by the lacing' cord 4l. As heretofore constructed, mitts of this character are provided with padding between the front and back sections loosely carried therein. As shown in the drawings, I provide a pad 5 comprising a blank 6 of suitable iexible fabric, such as duck, canvas or leather, conforming to the pattern and dimensions of the cover, adjacent to the outer edges of which are secured a row of eyelets 7 arranged to register with the eyelets 3 on the cover of the mitt. Upon the face of the blank 6, may be suitably secured a layer or layers of padding material 8 adapted to protect the hand of the wearer from the force of the impact of a ball in catching. Said padding material may be shaped and arranged to conform to the individual preference of players, and quilted and stitched or otherwise secured upon the blank G in such manner as to prevent its disarrangement under the tension of use. In assembling the parts of my mit-t, the pad 5, thus described, is placed between the front and back portion thereof, and laced therewith through the eyelets 3 in the cover and eyelets 7 in the pad by the cord 4, thereby securing the pad in the desired shape and position therein.
The construction and arrangement of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description and by reference to the accompanying drawings, and it will be appreciated that the parts and combinations thereof may be varied within a wide range from the specific exemplilication thereof shown, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a base ball mitt, the combination with a front and a back portion having eyelets adjacent to their outer edges, a detach-` able blank of flexible fabric conforming to the outer contour of said front and back portions carried therein, lacing eyelets secured adjacent to its outer edge adapted to register with said eyelets upon the front and back portions, flexible padding materials conforming to the shape of said blank secured upon the face thereof inside the line of Said eyelets, and a lacing cord adapted to separably lace said front and back portions and blank together around their outer edges, substantially as described.
2. A flexible mitt for base ball players, comprising a front and back portion adapted to be separably united adjacent to their outer edges, a flexible padding structure carried between said front and back portions 10 comprising a blank of flexible fabric having iexible padding' material mounted thereon and ineans for separably uniting said blank of flexible fabric with said front and back portions outside the line of said padding Inaterial whereby a sharp tapering outer edge and flexible separable structure of the initt is produced, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto ,signed my naine to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
