JAMES EDWARD BENNETT, OF MOMENCE, ILLINOIS.
V BASE-BALL GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,480, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed December 17, 1904. Serial No. 237,242.
To It whom, it fluty concern:
Be it known that I, Jnvms EDWARD BEN- NE'IT, a resident of Momencc, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base- Ball Gloves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in base-ball gloves, and more particularly double and single gloves used in the game of baseball, the object of the invention being to provide improved gloves which will permit the ball to be caught and held in the glove or gloves and not merely serve as a stop for the ball, as is the case with heavy gloves or pads as are in common use. I
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved double glove in operation. Fig. 2 is a rear or back view of the glove. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of modified forms ofdouble glove. Figs. 5 and 6 are front and back views of a form of single glove, and Figs. 7 and 8 are similar views of a modified form of single glove.
In the construction of double gloves shown in Figs. 1 and 2 right and left hand heavy gloves or pads are employed and connected around their rear or back edges by a sheet I), in which the ball strikes and draws the gloves together to tightly hold the ball, and an extra sheet or strip F is secured by stitching E to the lower edge of sheet I) and to the gloves or pads and prevents the ball dropping out, especially when the player removes his hand from one glove to grasp and throw the ball. If the player is right-handed, the right-hand glove or pad will have large fingers and thumb or be in mitten form to permit the easyand quick removal of that hand to grasp and throw the ball. If he be left-handed, the left-hand glove will be provided with this mitten or loose glove, and .l. have shown at l fingers and thumb such as may be used.
In Fig. 3 a form of double glove is shown in which the connecting-sheet I) or receptacle which is formed thereby projects considerably to the rear or back of the gloves or pads.
In Fig. 4 the double glove is made up ol outer and inner sheets of leather, having an open mouth to receive the ball and provided with hinges I, inclosed and held in place by stitching, which compels the sections at sides of the open mouth to come together or be closed by the ball entering the glove. Suitable padding may be provided between the outer and inner sheets of the double glove, and linger-rece 'itacles l are provided on the outside of the sections or halves of the glove.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I illustrate a single glove or pad in which the glove, between the thumb portion and linger portion ol the glove and at the opposite edge of the glove, as shown at 2 and 3, is indented and lacing is provided to give the glove the proper shape. In the front of the glove, around the linger edge, raised padding 5 is located, and similar raised padding 4 is located around the upper portion of the glove, which forms a receptacle for the ball in the palm portion of the glove, and the notched sides of the glove permit the same to fold to grasp and hold the ball.
In the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the glove is slit at its back both horizontally and vertically and the glove or hand-receptacle secured to the back and laced longitudinally and vertically to give the glove proper shape, and this glove is also padded around its edge to form a hollow for the ball and can be adjusted or folded by the hand to grasp the ball.
\Vith all of my improved forms of glove it will be seen that the ball can be held in the glove, which is a great improvement on the forms ol glove or pad in use, which only serve as stops for the ball and must be grasped and held by the free hand to prevent falling from the glove or pad.
Various other slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without (.leparting from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A base-ball glove constructed to provide a pocket for the ball and having means to allow the closing of the pocket on a ball to permit the latter to be held in the glove.
2. A base-ball glove or pad constructed to form a pocket or receptacle for the ball and having separated portions to permit the glove to be folded by the hand to grasp the ball.
3. A base-ball glove, comprising gloves or lingers for each hand and a sheet connecting them. i
4. The combination with a glove for each hand and a sheet secured to the edges of both gloves and forming a receptacle for the ball between them.
5. The combination with a glove for each hand, one glove constructed to permit easy and quick removal of the hand therefrom, and a sheet secured to both gloves and forming a receptacle for the ball between the gloves.
6. The combination with a trough or receptacle for the ball and devices for the hands at both sides thereof.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a double glove for use in the game of base-ball constructed for the reception of both hands of the player at the same time.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
