EMERSON F. BALDWIN, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SOLE-PROTECTOR FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed August 31, 1910. Serial No. 579,807.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERSON F. BALDwrN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole-Protectors for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for application to soles of boots or shoes, and has for its principal objects to provide a protector which may be readily and conveniently attached to a boot or shoe and as readily removed therefrom, to provide an attachment which is light, strong, durable, eflicient and comparatively inexpensive; and to provide an attachment which is practically inconspicuous when applied to a boot or shoe and which when in position upon a boot or shoe offers no projecting levers or the like for coming in contact with obstructions.
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which:
Figure 1, is a view in side elevation of a shoe equipped with a device of the invention, Fig. 2, is a perspective view with certain parts broken away of the device illustrated in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a view in transverse section drawn to an enlarged scale of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings and more particularly to F igs. 1, 2, and 3, the improved sole protecting device is shown as comprising a solid one-piece member 1, preferably of leather, shaped to conform to the contour of the sole of a boot or shoe 2. Secured upon the top of the member 1, and arranged marginally with respect thereto are a series of sole rim engaging members 3, preferably faced with leather or the like to prevent defacing of the leather of the shoe. These members 3, are adapted to engage the sides and top edge of a sole of a boot or shoe. Additional sole engaging members 4, may be present if desired. At the rear of and formed at an angle to said member 1, is a grooved portion 5. Slidably mounted in this grooved portion 0 is a clamp member 6, slotted as at 7 to operate with a fixed pin 8 in the slot 5. A guide piece 9, may be present for preventing the escape of the slidable clamp 6. Extending around the periphery of the member 1, is a vertically disposed facing 10, cut away as at 11, to permit of the free movement of the slidable clamp 6. This facing as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, is present for the purpose of concealing the sole of the boot or shoe to which the device is applied. In practice good results have been obtained by folding over upon the members 3, the free edge 12, of this facing to provide a good finish and neat appearance or in other words to pro vide the appearance of a shoe sole extension.
The rear portion of the member 1, has ex tended thereacross a cord or the like 13, concealing which is a covering 14:, of leather or the like, which terminates in a strap 15, provided with a male member 16, for cooperating a female member 17, secured to the facing 10. The cord 13, above referred to is secured at one end to the facing as at 18, and the other end passes through eyes a, of the slidable clamp 6, and is secured as at b, to the strap 15. By this arrangement and construction of parts when a shoe has applied thereto the sole protector of the invention, the same is held snugly in place when the clamp 6, is shifted inwardly and the strap 15, secured with respect to the facing 10, see Fig. 1. In this connection, it may be remarked that the cord 13, and its covering 14, are pulled together and serve to hug the underside of a sole of a shoe to prevent water finding its way between the sole and protector. A leather or like facing 19, may be present upon the upper surface of the member 1, to present a good appear ance and to permit of the protector being easily slid over the sole of a boot or shoe.
What I claim is:
A device ofthe character indicated comprising a solid one-piece member of the contour of the sole of a boot or shoe adapted to cover the complete sole thereof, a series of clamp pieces fitted around. the marginal edge of .said member, said pieces extending from the toe portion thereof rearwardly to the points marking the greatest width of said member and adapted to engage the sides and top edge of a boot or shoe, a vertically disposed facing fitted around the marginal edge of the sole member and extended horizontally over and secured to clamp for engaging the vertical facing to said clamp pieces, a slidable clamp piece lock the parts together. 10 5 carried by said sole member for engaging In testimony whereof, I have hereunto the rear of a boot or shoe sole, a pliable signed my name.
5 member secured to the rear of said member EMERSON F. BALDWIN.
for hugging the underside of a boot or shoe Witnesses: 1 sole, and means operatively connected with WILLIAM J. J ACKSON,
said pliable member and said slidable AGNES E. GASKEY.
