LADYS. HAT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 19, 1911.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Serial No. 628,155.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BELASCO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ladys Hat-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has -in view are: to provide a fastener for ladies hats having means for insertion in the hair to grasp and hold the same, said means being operable outside'the hat; and to provide a fastener of the character set forth which is normally permanently attached to the hat but is removable therefrom.
With these objects in view the invention consists in providing a bowed comb-like member pivotally mounted in the hat structure and adapted to be rotated to bury the teeth of the comb in the wearers hair after the hat is adjusted on the head, means external to the hat structure for rotating the comb being provided.
The inventionfurther consists in providing a resilient hoop-like member adapted to operate in conjunction with the comb to imprison the hair between the said hooplike member and said comb.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure l is a pictorial view of a ladys head, showing in vertical longitudinal section a hat provided with a fastener constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the hat, showing in conjunction therewith a fastener constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; and Fig. 3 is'a detail view, on an enlarged scale, showing in cross section the pivotal arrangement of the retaining hoop and comb, and the removable manipulating head for the comb.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the comb is provided with a resilient bowed back 8 from which are extended the elongated teeth 9. The teeth 9 are cupped and formed in length and shape to resemble what is known as a ladys back comb. The back 8 is elongated to form a bowed portion shaped to pass over the head to insert the teeth 9 in the hair at about midway of the head or slightly in advance of the median line of the hat. The ends of the back 8 are fixedly secured to the pins 10 and 11. The pins 10 and 11 are rotatably mounted in bearings formed in the hoop 12, which hoop is held in position on the said pins by collars 13 and 14 fixedly mounted on the said pins. The pins are provided at the outer ends with screw threaded sections 15, as seen best in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The screws 15 are furnished to engage screw threads formed in the shank 16 of the setting for the jewel heads 17. The heads 17 are mounted on the pin stem after the fastener has been installed on the hat A.
The hoop 12 is shaped to a somewhat more elliptical form than is imparted to the back 8 of the comb so that when the comb is swung on the pins 10 and 11, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the hair which is gathered by the teeth 9 is crowded between the back 8 and the hoop 12 to hold the ha; steady on the head.
The hoop 12 is provided with one or more perforations 18 through which are passed suitable fastenings, such as thread or a light rivet to anchor the hoop in upright position within the hat. The anchorage for the hoop thus formed by the fastening devices extended through the perforations 18 and by the pins 10 and 11 imparts the required rigidity to the hoop necessary to the operation of the fastener. The operation of a fastener when constructed and arranged as described and shown is as follows: To install the fastener in the hatthe pins 10 and 11 are forced through the side of the hat to extend externally therefrom above the brim B. The heads 17 are next secured in position on the pins by screwing the shank 16 over the threaded section 15 of the said pins. The head 17 is next secured in an upright position by passing the anchoring devices above mentioned through the perforations 18 provided in the body of the hoop 12. The fastener having been thus installed the hat is adjusted to the head with the comb disposed as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings at the front of the hat or adjacent the forehead of the wearer. The hat being adjusted the wearer grasps one or both of the heads 17 and by means thereof rotates the comb on the bearings of the pins 10 and 11 to a position substantially that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. As stated, the teeth 9 of the comb gather the hair and slightly bunch the same under the hoop 12, to the resultant crowding of the hair between the teeth 9 and the hoop 12, providing a suitable anchorage for the hat.
It will be noted that the hoop 12 is curved forward at the lower ends to form the portion 19 adjacent the connections of the hoop 12 with the pins 10 and 11. This arrangement provides for a slight added resiliency to the hoop 12 should the hair or dressing pins therefor be caught between the hoop 12 and the portion 19.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A ladys hat fastener, having a bowed comb portion adapted to be rotatably mounted on the hat structure and adapted to be disposed within the crown of the hat; means operatively connected with the said comb portion and adapted to be disposed exterior the hat structure for rotating the said comb portion to insert the teeth thereof within the hair of the wearer; and a hoop member adapted to be fixedly mounted within the crown of the hat and connected with said comb portion to form a clamp therewith.
2. A ladys hat fastener, having a resilient hoop member adapted to be fixedly mounted within the crown of a hat adjacent the transverse median section thereof; a bowed comb rotatively mounted on said hoop member to swing from the forward portion of said crown toward said hoop member and under the same; and a plurality of extended pivot members for said comb rotatively mounted in said hoop member and having manipulating devices at the ends thereof and adapted to be placed external the hat structure.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB BELASCO.
