EDWIN C. HENRIKSON, OF 'IIOG-A, NORTH DAKOTA.
TABLE-GASTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 11, 1911.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Serial No. 620,295.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN o HENRIKSON, a naturalized citizen of the United States, residing at Tioga, in the county of Williams and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Table- Casters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to table casters, the object of the invention being to provide apparatus including means whereby the casters can be readily extended to operative positions below the ends of the legs of the table when it is desired to shift the same from place to place and for raising the casters above the lower ends of the supporting feet of the table so that the table can be firmly supported and held against movement.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a front view of the table. Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is a perspective view of one of the casters. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the pivoted keeper, showing the operating lever held in a locked position.-
The table 1 is provided with supporting legs 2. Four legs are illustrated herein, but any suitable number may be employed. Each leg is preferably hollow throughout, and constructed to provide communicating large and small passages 3 and 4: through which the vertical caster supports 5 extend. These supports are provided at their lower ends with knuckles 6, and at the sides of the knuckles the supports are provided with oppositely inclined stop shoulders 7. The caster brackets 8 are pivoted, at 9, to the knuckles 6, each bracket having revolubly mounted therein a suitable form of caster or roller 10. The upper ends of the supports 5 are provided with vertical pins or reduced portions 11 having heads 12 thereon at their upper ends. Caster adjusting mechanism 13 is employed for moving the caster supports vertically. This mechanism includes a head 14 which is pivoted, at 15, beneath the top of the table. Arms 16 radiate from the center of the head, and as illustrated, these arms are connected to the inner ends of actuating rods 17, the outer ends of the rods being pivotally connected, at 18, with the arms 19 of the bell crank levers 20. These levers are pivotally supported on brackets 21 which are secured to the underside of the top of the table. The arms 22 of the levers extend through slots 23 at the upper ends of the supporting legs. The arms 22 are bifurcated, at 24:, to receive the reduced ends or shanks 11 of the caster supports. From this construction it will be seen that the caster supports are substantially swiveled to the bell crank levers, thus permitting the supports to be freely revolved when the table is moved across the surface on which it is supported. The head 14 of the caster adjusting mechanism carries a fixed lever 25. This lever extends through a slot 26 in one of the depending side bars 27 of the table. A pivoted keeper 28 consisting of an arm centrally pivoted within the slot 26 whereby the moving of the same from a horizontal to a vertical position permits the operating lever 25 to move withm the slot, but when the keeper is returned to a horizontal position it is designed to engage the lever 25 so as to hold the same against pivotal movement. When the lever is engaged by the keeper, as just described, the caster supports will be in positions so as to cause their casters to be disposed above the plane of the lower ends of the supporting feet of the table.
I claim:
1. A table including supporting legs therefor, caster supports mounted for vertical movement in the legs, controlling mechanism mounted beneath the table and operatively connected with the supports to move them vertically in the legs, said controlling means including a pivoted head, arms extending radially therefrom, and operating rods having their inner ends connected to said arms, a lever for the controlling mechanism, the said lever being extended through one side of the table and means for holding the lever against movement.
2. A table, supporting legs therefor, caster supports mounted for vertical movement in the legs, actuating mechanism for moving the supports vertically in the legs and including bell crank levers having portions loosely fitted to the reduced upper portions of the caster supports, and means for controlling said mechanism.
3. A table, supporting legs therefor, caster supports mounted for vertical adjustment in the legs, said supports provided with reduced portions and head portions at their upper ends, actuating mechanism for moving the supports vertically in the legs, said mechanism including angle levers loosely and operatively connected to the reduced portions and head portions of the supports, caster brackets pivotally mounted on the lower ends of the supports, swinging in a vertical plane, and said supports provided with oppositely inclined stop shoulders, providing a means to limit the vertical movement of the caster brackets, a lever for controlling the actuating mechanism for moving the supports vertically in the legs, said lever being extended through a slot formed in one of the depending side bars of the table, and means for holding the lever against any pivotal movement, said means consisting of an arm centrally pivoted withili the slot and adapted to move in a- Vertical p ane.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
