To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BRANDT V. B. DIXON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention'relates to hinges or hangers that may be used for various purposes but are particularly intended foruse in connection with screens, sashes, storm windows and the like, which it is desirable to attach or suspend in a readily detachable fashion. For example, the improved hinge or hanger is of great utility as employed for detachably suspending a screen in a window frame, as the hinge members applied to the respective parts may be very easily placed in and out of cooperative relation with respect to each other and firmly and effectively locked together, the unlocking of the parts being also a very easy matter.
To these ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of the parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows the assembled hinge in front elevation, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the parts shown in Fig. 1, Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views of one hinge member, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the other hinge member.
The two elements or membersto be fastened or hinged together are shown at A and B.
C indicates one member of the hinge and D the other member. In the embodiment shown, the member C is placed above the member D and applied to the element A by means of screws 0. At its lower portion the hinge member or leaf 0 is provided at the ends with portions or extensions 0 bent around the ends of a pintle 0 which is thereby fastened in place in the leaf C with an elongated space 0 between it and the body portion of said leaf. The leaf D is provided at one edge (the upper one as shown) with a curved bent over lip (Z which is preferably formed integral with the leaf D and occupies a position intermediate of the ends of the aforesaid edge, where it is adapted to enter the space 0 of the leaf C, as shown in Fig. 2. At a point adjacent the junction between the lip or extension (Z and the body of leaf D said extension is bowed outwardly from the front face of said leaf and shaped to fit over the pintle in substantially the manner shown in Fig. 2. The
extremity (Z of the extension (Z is extended terminal when the parts have the relative relation shown in that figure.
In order to hold the extension (Z detachably on the pintle 0 I employ a suitable fastening device which is adapted to bridge the space between the terminal portion of the extension d and the hinge leaf D, this device being so mounted as to be readily movable out of the position indicated into one wherein it will permit the extension (Z to be withdrawn from the pintle. In the embodiment illustrated, the fastening device comprises a stem 6 mounted to turn at one end in a suitable opening in the leaf D and inserted in a correspondingly formed opening in the member B. The stem E carries-a branch or arm 6 which extends back of the pintle o and thereby prevents the leaf D from being withdrawn from the latter, the stem 6 being held against longitudinal dislocation with respect to the leaf D by means of a suitable connection such as indicated at 6 In the embodiment illustrated the connection 6 consists of a groove in the stem which is engaged by the edge of the opening in the leaf, in such a manner that while the stem is free to turn in the leaf it cannot be displaced longitudinally with respect to the same; The branch or arm 6 is accommodated in the mortise 03 in the member A and also in a mortise d in the member B, so that it can be swung out of its position behind the pintle by giving the stem e a slight turn in the proper direction. When the parts are in the locked position shown in Fig. 2, the arm or branch 6 extends into abutment with one face of the terminal portion (Z of extension (Z, so that a rather firm frictional locking is provided, the arm 6 being made of suitable length to efiect this result.

is placed in position in the leaf D, and the latter is then applied to the member B, the stem 6 being inserted in a suitable opening or socket and the arm or branch 6' entering the mortise (Z The leaf'D is then secured to the member 13 by suitable means, such as the screws f. Of course it will be under stood that the fastener e, c is preferably permanently mounted on its hinge leaf when the device is placed on the market.
The stem 6 preferably extends completely through the member B so that the rear end of the stem is freely accessible for adjustment. This can be very easily effected by means of a screw driver inserted in a nick or slot 6 in the end of the stem, as best shown in Fig. 5; By turning the screw driver the arm or branch 6 may be easily turned from the locking position shown in full lines in Fig. 5 to the inoperative position shown in dotted lines. As previously stated, the front end of the stem 6 extends out beyond the front face of the leaf D in the preferable embodiment of the invention, and of course, the adjustment of the stem could be effected from that end if such were desired.
Obviously numerous modifications in the details of the device may be made without departing from the invention. In particular, the form of the fastening device for looking one hinge leaf to the pintle of the other is susceptible of numerous modifications without digressing from my inventive idea.
What I claim is 1. In a hinge, the combination of a leaf carrying a pintle, a second leaf having a curved extension to partially embrace said pintle, and a stem mounted to turn in said second leaf and having a part adapted to interlock frictionally with said extension behind the pintle when the parts are in assembled position, whereby the pintle is held seated in said extension, the separation of the leaves being permitted by a turning movement of'the stem.
2. In a hinge, the combination of a leaf carrying a pintle, a second leaf having a curved extension to partially embrace said pintle, said extension having a substantially straight terminal portion arranged to project through and beyond a space between the first named leaf and the pintle, and a stem mounted to turn in said second leaf and carrying means adapted to interlock frictionally with the terminal portion of the extension behind the pintle, to hold the latter detachably seated in said extension.
3. The combination of adjacent but separate members, a hinge leaf applied to one of said members and carrying a pintle spaced from the body of the leaf, said member being mortised behind the pintle, a second hinge leaf applied to the other member and having a curved extension partially embracing the pintle and extending through and beyond the space between the latter and the first named leaf, a stem extending through and mounted to turn in said second leaf and the member to which the latter is applied, and an arm on said stem operating in a mortise in the second member and the mortise in the first member, said arm being arranged to contact with the aforesaid extension beyond the pintle and to be swung from behind the pintle by the turning movement of the stem.
4. As an article of manufacture, a hinge comprising a leaf carrying a pintle spaced from the body thereof, a second leaf having a bowed lip or extension at one edge, said lip or extension being formed to embrace the pintle and having a straight terminal portion to extend through and beyond the space between the pintle and the first named leaf, a stem turnable at one end in said second leaf parallel with said straight terminal portion, and an arm on said stem to interlock frictionally with the adjacent face of said terminal portion of the lip or extension, the stem being provided at one end with a slot, as described.
