T all whom/it may concern Be it known that I, OTIS P. SEWARD, citizen .of the United States, residing at Fredericksburg in the county of Spottsylvania and State of Firginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Brackets, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in shade hangers and the invention has for its object an improved shade bracket which admits of the shade being expeditiously applied theretoand which engages with the shade in an effective manner to insure against the accidental displacement thereof.

A further object of the invention is a shade bracket which possesses to a marked degree the characteristics of simplicity, durability and strength and which is susceptible of being formed from sheet metal and is thus capable of being easily and cheaply manufactured.

With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations,

of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one application of a pair of shade brackets constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of such brackets; Fig. 3 is an end elevation illustrating another application of the in vention; Fig. 41 is a view illustrating in detail the application of the invention shown in Fig. 1.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

My improved shade bracket or hanger consists essentially, of a pair of horizontally elongated brackets 1 and 2 which are designed to be applied to the window frame so as to project forwardly therefrom in substantially parallel planes. At their rear ends, the brackets are provided with perforated attaching bases 3 that may be of any suitable size or shape according to the style of the window with which the invention is to be employed. bases, the brackets are formed with apertures 1 through which fastening devices may be inserted, in someinstances, to further attach the brackets to the window casing. The brackets are formed in their forward ends with forwardly and upwardly inclined extensions 5, the extensions being preferably flush with the upper edges of the brackets and being spaced above the lower edges thereof, as shown. The upper portion of each bracket and the extension 5 are reinforced by a rib 6 that follows the line of the upper edge of the bracket and is slightly spaced apart therefrom.

The extension 5 of the bracket 1 is formed with a slot 7 leading horizontally rearwardly from its forward edge, the rear or inner end of the slot being turned perpensdicularly downwardly, as indicated at 8.

This slot is arranged to cooperate with a round opening 9 formed in the extension 5 of the bracket 2 at a point corresponding to the downwardly turned end 8. A slot 10 leads horizontally from the forward edge of the bracket 1 below the extension 5 and is substantially similar to the slot 7 the inner end of the slot being turned substantially perpendicularly downwardly as indicated at 11. The slot 1.0 is designed to be employed in connection with a round opening 12 formed in the bracket 2 at a point corresponding to the angularly turned end 11.

The bracket 2 has a slot 13 leading horizontally from its forward edge at a point below its extension 5, said slot being disposed just above the round opening 12 and terminating in close proximity thereto with its inner end 14 turned substantially vertically upwardly. A round opening 15 is formed in the bracket 1 at a point corresponding to the inner end 14. Attention is here directed to the fact that a recess or notch 16 is formed in the lower wall of the main portion of the slot 13 opposite the upturned inner end 14 thereof, for a purpose to be presently disclosed. The bearing openings 12 and 15 and slots 10 and 13 are all spaced apart rearwardly from the bearing opening 9 and the slot 7.

In one application of the invention, the same is employed for supporting a pair of shades, one of which is of a light color, while the other is of a dark hue. In this instance the shade brackets are fastened to the upper corners of the window casing. The roller 17 carrying the lighter shade has its gudgeons seated in the opening 9 and the inner end 8 of the slot 7 while the gudgeons of the roller 18 carrying the darker shade are fitted in the opening 12 and the angularly turned end 11 of the slot 10. Both shades-unroll toward the bottom oithe window casing. The roller 18 is supported behind and slightly below the roller 17 (see Fig. 3), and is, of course, hidden thereby when said shade is drawn downwardly, The fringe or hem of the lighter shade is arranged to hide the roller 18 when the lighter shade is rolled up, andhence the roller 18 is at all times hidden from view.

at all times hidden by the roller 19 in the same manner as inthe application of the invention above described. This is a manifest desideratum inasmuch as it insures against the possible entrance of light at the middle of the window between the twoshades of rollers, as is liable to occur where the shade rollers are mounted one above the other 1n the customary manner.

-From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided an improved bracket which is particularly efficient in operation and positively holds the gudgeons of the shade rollers against acci-,

dental displacement, which is susceptible of general application and may be employed in connection with windows of various different styles, and which is quite practical and may be easily and cheaply manufac- 'tured. Inasmuch as the slots all lead hori-, V

zontally from the forward edges of the brackets, the shade rollers are rendered capable of beingapplied thereto with greater facility and are adapted to be supported in close proximity window casing.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed-as new is:
