To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WViLLIAM J. EICHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perryopolis, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to penholders, and has for an object to provide means, whereby the pen can be readily and quickly released from the holder without necessitating touching the same with the fingers and thereby avoiding soiling of or injury to the fingers, incident to such removal of the pen.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind that can be cheaply constructed and which will be strong and durable and reliable in operation.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the penholder. Fig. 2 is a section therethrough on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the retaining jaws in their released positions.

The penholder comprises a handle or stock 1 on which is slidably mounted the retaining sleeve 2 which may be operated so that it will effectively embrace the effective nib receiving portion of the stock as shown in Fig. l of the drawing. A pin 3 extends outwardly from the stock and through the longitudinal guide slot 4 in the retaining sleeve so as to hold the latter against rotation and to serve as a stop to limit the forward and rearward movements of the sleeve. A ferrule or sleeve 5 is mounted on the forward end of the stock and formed therein is a longitudinal groove 6 in which is disposed the shank of the hinge pint-1e 7, the said pintle having spur like ends 8 which are driven into the stock, as shown.

the ferrule or sleeve 5 and as illustrated, the jaw 10 has knuckles 11 which receive the pintle 7, being disposed at the sides of a similar knuckle 12 on the jaw 9, the latter also receiving the pintle so that the jaws may be readily opened or closed and moved toward or away from each other.

The hinge pintle 7 is disposed lowermost upon the stock of the penholder and when it is desired to engage the pen with the holder, the sleeve 2 is moved onto the jaws, holding the same closed, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The pen is then inserted between the ferrule 5 and the jaws 9 and 10. \Vhen the pen becomes worn and it is desired to substitute a new one therefor, the holder is rotated so that the hinge pintle is disposed uppermost and horizontally. The retaining sleeve 2 is then grasped by the hand and moved toward the inner end of the stock, uncovering the jaws and permitting them to gravitate to open positions, whereupon, the pen will be automatically released.

I claim:

1. A penholder comprising a stock, a grooved member secured thereto, jaws hingedly mounted in the groove of said member, and a retaining sleeve movably mounted on the stock and adapted to embrace the jaws to hold the same closed.

2. A penholder comprising a stock, a grooved member secured thereto, a pintle eX- tending through the groove of the member and having portions engaged with the stock, jaws movably mounted on the pintle, and a retaining member movable on the stock and adapted to hold the jaws in closed positions.
