To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS E. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Starkweather, in the county of Ramsey and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Commodes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to dry closets or commodes, and the principal object of the same is to provide a commode that is strictly sanitary and in which novel means are provided for conducting the odors from the commode to a chimney or other fine so that there will be no odors in the room where the commode is located, nor while being emptied.

A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the two sections of the ventilating flue. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the sections of the ventilating flue assembled. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the hinge for connecting the seat and cover of the commode. Fig. 4 is a View in side elevation showing a variation of the invention. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a variation of the upper flue section. Fig. 6 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, showing a variation of the lower flue section. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view showing a variation of the supporting standard.

The improved commode comprises a bowl 7 that is preferably formed of galvanized iron and is coated inside and outside with white enamel to improve the appearance of the same and also to facilitate cleaning, and also adding to the life of the commode. The bowl-7 has an enlarged upper portion which has a semi-circular front end 8 and a reduced rear end that tapers to a rounded portion 9 that overhangs the bowl. The bottom 10 of the bowl 7 is flat so that it will rest firmly on the floor or other supporting surace.

A seat 11 is provided for the bowl 7 and conforms to the contour of the upper portion thereof. A flue section 12 extends through the rear end of seat- 11 and the upper portion thereof is provided with alined transverse openings 13. A fine sec tion 141 telescopes with flue section 12 and its lower end is provided with bayonet slots 15 for engaging a bar 16 that is passed through openings 13 to lock said sections 12 and 14: against accidental separation. Said flue section lt is provided with a circumferential abutment 22 that may be formed by beading said section and upon which a suitable stop may rest to prevent the said sections moving upward.

A substantially U-shaped strap hinge 23 is carried by the rear end of seat 11 and surrounds the base of the flue section 12. A cover 24 is pivotally connected to the free ends of said hinge.

Flue section 1 1 has its upper portion in communication with a chimney or other fine so that all odors from the bowl 7 will be conducted from the room in which the commode is located.

It will be clear from the foregoing that fiue section 12 can be readily disconnected from the section 1 1, so that the commode while sealed by the cover can be taken to the place where it is to be emptied, and as the seat is removable, the entire contents of the bowl can be readily removed and said bowl thoroughly cleaned. It will also be clear that the overhanging rear portion 9 of the bowl forms a collecting chamber for the gases and odors, and as said chamber is in direct communication with the flue sections 12 and 14:, said gases and odors will be conveyed from the commode.

In the form of the invention. shown in Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 the upper flue section 26 has a right angularly projecting supporting arm 27 terminating in a flange 28 that overlaps and is rigidly fastened to the upper portion of a supporting standard 29. Standard 29 is preferably formed of angle iron, and is provided with flat divergent feet 30 through which openings 31 are formed for the reception of suitable fasteners for rigidly attaching the standard to a floor or other supporting surface. Flue section 26 and arm 27 may be integral, and said flue section is provided with an elongated longitudinally extending bayonet slot 32 that is open at the bottom of said section. The lower flue section 33 enters the opening in the seat 11 of the bowl 7 and is provided with an external bead 34 that prevents said section dropping through said opening. The upper end of flue section 33 telescopes with the lower portion of section 26 and is provided with a laterally projecting lug 35 that slidably engages slot 32. In this form of the invention the flue section 26 is stationary and when the bowl is to be moved, flue section 33 is forced upward in section 26 and rotated so that the upper end of slot 32 will receive lug 35 and thereby retain sec tion 33 clear of the bowl 7 VVhat- I claim as my invention is:

1. A commode comprising a bowl, a flue therefor, an upper flue section telescoping with said bowl flue section, said upper flue section being provided with a laterally projecting arm, said arm terminating in a flange, a supporting standard to which said flange is fastened, and fiat divergent feet 15 carried by said standard.

2. In a commode, a flue, an arm extending from said flue and having its outer end bent at an angle, and a standard formed of angle iron secured to the bent end portion of said 20 arm and having its lower end portion split and bent to form diverging feet.
