SANITARY CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed May 18, 1914. Serial No. 839,419.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. Boo'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Closet, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to a sanitary dry closet, and aims to provide a novel and improved closet for use in districts or localities not provided with sewers.
One object of the present invention is to provide in a dry closet the peculiar combinationof a hopper or bowl, and a receptacle, whereby the receptacle may be withdrawn and emptied from time to time, means being provided for ventilating or withdrawing the foul gases from both the bowl or hopper and receptacle, whereby the closet will be odorless and sanitary in all respects.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a bowl or hopper of unique construction, whereby it will be particularly adapted for the purposes of the present invention.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide novel means for holding the receptacle in place, and for enabling the same to be withdrawn in a convenient and simple manner.
The invention has for another object, to provide novel means for sealing the joint between the hopper or bowl and receptacle, when the receptacle is in normal position.
It is also within the scope of the presentinvention, to provide a dry closet of simple substantial, and inexpensive construction, which may be readily applied to various buildings, and which will be improved generally in its construction. I
With the foregoing and other ob]ects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides H1 the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanving drawings, wherein m Figure 1 is a front view of the closet. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the receptacle being illustrated in its lowered position in dotted lines.
The bowl or latrine 1 comprises a casing or outer shell 9 and an inner shell or hopper 3, both of which are preferably constructed of sheet metal, and which are tapered downwardly or of inverted frustoconical form. The inner shell or hopper 3 has a greater taper than the casing or outer shcllifl whereby the lower end of the inner shell or hopper 3 will be spaced from the lower end of the casing or outer shell 2 to provide an annular chamber or space be tween the two shells. The upper ends of the shells 2 and 3 are attached, the outershell or casing 53 being provided with an annular outstruck corrugation or head l; adjacent its upper end, and the inner shell or hopper 3 is provided with a similar corrugation or bead 5 fitting or seating within the head or corrugation l to support the inner shell or hopper 3 from the outer shell or easing 2. The upper end portion of the inner shell or hopper 3 fits snugly within the upper end portion of the shell or casing 2, and the upper end of the shell or hopper 3 is headed or flanged over the upper end of the shell or casing Q, as at (5. Thus, the two shells are rigidly secured together, whereby the inner shell or hopper will, be properly supported from the upper end of the outer shell or casing 2, the lower end of the inner shell or hopper 3 being free.
The bowl or latrine 1 may be mounted upon floor 7, although the part 7 may be taken to represent a suitable auxiliary floor or platform adapted to be applied within a bath room or the like. In applying the bowl or latrine 1 to the floor or platform 7, the floor or platform 7 is provided with an opening 7, and a downwardly tapered or inverted :t'rusto-conical sleeve or ring 8 has its upper edge portion fitted snugly within and riveted to the lower end portion of the shell or casing 2, and projects below the shell or casing 2 and fits snugly within the opening 7 The lower end of the shell or casing 2 is provided with an outturned flange 9 seating upon the floor or platform 7, and the lower edge of the sleeve or ring 8 is provided with an outturned flange or lip 10 fitting below the platform or floor 7 to hold the bowl or latrine 1 in place upon the floor or platform. The lower end of the inner shell or hopper 3 projects loosely within the sleeve or ring 8.
The bowl or latrine 1, is provided with an ordinary seat 11, preferably constructed of wood, and having its rear end hinged to a board or bar 12 secured to the upper end of the back or rear wall of the bowl or lat'rine 1. A lid 13 is also preferably hinged to the board or bar 12 to swing over the seat 11. as usual.
In order toventilate the bowl or latrine 1, an upwardly extending ventilating pipe 14: has its lower end bent angularly and attached to the rear or back wall of the shell or casing 2, to communicate with the annular chamber or space between the shells 2 and 3. The pipe 1 1 may be extended to the roof, or to any other suitable point, to communicate with the atmosphere, as usual.
The lower end of the bowl or latrine l is provided with a seal for the receptacle hereinafter described, and to this end, a down-- wardly tapered ring or annular apron 15 is disposed below the floor or platform 7, surrounding the opening 7 and is provided at its upper edge with an inturned annular flange 16 fitting against the bottom of the floor or platform 7 over the flange 10 of the sleeve or ring 8. Thus, the flange 10 being turned under the flange 16 of the seal 15, not only supports the seal or ring 15, but will also hold the bowl or latrine 1 in place upon the floor or platform.
The device or means for mounting the receptacle below the floor or platform 7, includes a U-shaped hanger 17 having its ends engaged to the floor or platform 7. The hanger 17 embodies the pendants 18 which are preferably constructed of pipe sections, and which have their upper ends engaged through the door or platform 7, nuts 19 being threaded upon the upper projecting ends of the pendants or pipes and seating upon the floor or platform 7 to support the hanger 17, although other means may be provided for mounting the hanger in place.
-' A T-coupling 20 has one end threadedly or otherwise engaged over the lower end of each pendant 18, and an elbow 21 has one end or arm threadedly or otherwise engaged within the other end of the T-coupling. A. cross member or yoke 22, preferably in the form of a pipe, has its ends threadedly or otherwiseengaged within the other or lower arms of the elbows 21, to complete the hanger 17. Short pipe sections or stubs are engaged or threaded within the branches or arms of the T-couplings 20, which project inwardly, the pipe sections or stubs 23 forming pintles or pivot mernbers for the receptacle carrier 24:, as will presently appear. 7
The receptacle carrier, which is support ed by the hanger 17, is in the form of a crank, and includes the terminal elbows 25,
which have their outer arms loosely or pivotal-ly engaged over the pintles or pivot members 23. The crank or carrier further includes pipe sections 26 threadedly or otherwise engaged to the other arms of the elbows 25, an elbow 27 engaged to one'of the pipe sections 26, a T-coupling 28 having one end engaged to the other pipe section 26, and a cross pipe or member 29, having one end engaged in the branch or arm of the 'T-coupling 28 and having its other end engaged to the elbow 27. The carrier or crank is also provided with a handle 30 preferably constituting a section of pipe,
and having one end threadedly or otherwise engaged into the end of the T-coupling 28 remote from the corresponding pipe section 26.
The crank 21 is adapted to be normally held in upright position, with the handle or lever 30 extending upwardly adjacent one of the pendants 18, a latch or catch 31 being pivoted to the said pendant 18 adjacent its upper end and being engageable over the upper or free end of the handle or lever 30.
The carrier for the receptacle further includes the platform or seat 32 mounted upon the cross member or yoke 29 of the crank, and having a pair of cleats 33 secured to the bottom thereof, the cross member or yoke '29 of the crank being journaled be tween the platform or seat 32 and the cleats 33.
The receptacle or can 34, which is prefer ably constructed of galvanized sheet metal but which may be of any suitable construction, is normally seated upon the platform or seat, and the platform 32 is provided with suitable stops or retaining pins or lugs 35 for holding the receptacle 34: in position thereon. The upper end or mouth of the receptacle 34 is adapted to fit over and snugly embrace the seal or ring 15.
When the closet is in normal condition, the receptacle 34: is seated upon the platform 32,.and is raised by raising the crank or carrier 21, which will cause the mouth of the receptacle 31130 be engaged to the seal 15, the upper end of the receptacle 34: being caused to tightly embrace the seal for preventing the egressof air from between the receptacle and bowl or latrine. The platform v-32 may be held in raised position,by
engaging the latch 31 over the upper end of the handle or lever 30, as seen in Fig. 1.
When the parts are thus in normal position, an upward draft of air will be established through the ventilating pipe 14, which will draw the foul gases and odors from the chamber or space between the shells 2 and 3 of the bowl, it being noted that the said space or chamber communicates with the interior of the hopper 3, as well as the interior of the receptacle 34. In this manner, the closet is practically odorless, and fly or insect proof. The receptacle 34 may be removed and discharged from time to time. To remove the receptacle 34, the latch 31 is disengaged from the handle or lever 30, and the crank or carrier 34 is then lowered by swinging the handle or lever downwardly, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The platform 32 is thus carried downwardly to one side, and may be maintained at a horizontal or approximately horizontal position during the gravitation of the receptacle 34. The receptacle 34 may then be lifted from the platform or seat 32 to be removed and emptied. After the receptacle 34 has been emptied, it may be replaced upon the platform 32, and the platform 32 may then be raised, as above indicated, to restore the receptacle 34 to its normal position below the bowl or latrine 1.
It is to be noted that the platform or seat 32 is pivotally mounted upon the crank, whereby the receptacle 34 may be held in upright position notwithstanding the various angular positions to which the crank may be swung in raising and lowering the receptacle.
From the foregoing, the advantages and attributes of the present invention will be obvious to those versed in the art, it being noted that the objects aimed at have been carried out satisfactorily by the provision of the peculiar structure described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
