To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MORRIS GILGER, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoop-Retainers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in hoop retainers for buckets, barrels, tubs and analogous containers.

One object of the invention is to provide a hoop retainer of this character which may be readily applied to the hoops of the container and which may be taken up or shortened to adjust the hoops when the same have become loosened from the shrinkage of the container.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combined hoop retainer and bail or handle attaching member whereby a bail or handle may be securely fastened to the container.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will'be more fully described hereinafter and afterward specifically claimed. v

In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bucket showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the upper portion of the bucket and the combined retainer and handle attaching device; Fig. 3 is a similar view through the lower portion of the bucket and one of the lower hoop retaining devices; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a tub showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 5 is a similar view of a barrel showing the application of the invention to the hoops thereof.

Referring specifically to sthe drawings 1 indicates a strip of metal of suitable width and of suflicient length to extend between and connect two hoops of the container as shown. The ends of the strip 1 are engaged beneath the hoops and the projecting portions 2 of said ends bent over and into engagement with the outer sides of the hoops thereby securely retaining the latter in position on the container.

The strips 1 may vary in length according to the distance between the hoops. Any desired number of strips may be provided and they may be spaced apart and arranged between the hoops of the container in any suitable manner.

My improved retainers 3 between an up per pair of adj acenthoops, are extended upwardly above the upper hoop or above the top of the container as shown at 4. The extended upper portion 4: of the re tainer is then bent outwardly and downwardly upon itself and its end is again in sorted beneath the hoop. The portion of the end projecting below the hoop is then bent upwardly into engagement with the outer side of the hoop as shown at 5. In the doubled or folded projecting upper portion 1 of the strips, are formed bail or handle at taching eyes 6 with which are engaged the bails 7 of the bucket, or handles 8 of the tub as sh own. In thus constructing and arranging these retainers they serve a double function of holding the hoops in place and providing handle attaching means whereby the bails or handles of the container are firmly attached to the latter.

The strips from which the containers are constructed are preferably formed of malleable metal and the ends thereof are adapted to be straightened and rebent to adjust the hoops into closer engagement with the sides of the container when the latter have shrunk.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
